The 7th district of Vienna, Neubau, is a vibrant area known for its independent spirit, which attracts a young, hipster crowd. From exclusively vegetarian restaurants to trendy Asian eateries, here are the best restaurants in Neubau.

Restaurant 1070

Restaurant, Contemporary

This restaurant, named after the district in which it is located, has a simple philosophy that makes the decision process a breeze. The restaurant owners have decided not to have a menu – a controversial decision, however, one which they feel will gives customers a unique experience. Instead of guests selecting their meals, they provide chefs with their preferences and dislikes (including allergies and whether or not they eat meat) and then, have a dish prepared for them. Their motto is ‘eat, drink, enjoy and be surprised’ and their mysterious approach to dinner certainly lives up to this.

Die Burgermacher

The chefs at Die Burgermacher want to prove that ‘a burger can be much more than a piece of meat between two slices of bread’. Set up in 2008, this trendy joint gets creative with their menu — alongside the classic beef and cheeseburgers, you’ll find the Wie Bei Oma (with whiskey onions, Emmental and ham) and the Alp Tram (with an omelette patty and paprika sauce).

ULRICH

A modern eatery with a weekly changing menu, Ulrich is located in the most historic area of Neubau – next to the district’s sunny yellow Baroque church. Lunch is affordable – under 10 euros for three dishes – and always includes something exciting and creative. For dinner, there is a range of salads as well as various contemporary mains, such as wild boar schnitzel and pumpkin risotto.

Indian food can be hard to come by in Austria’s capital, however, if you have a craving for curry, then this is where you should head. Using traditional and authentic recipes, Restaurant Bombay caters to both carnivores and vegetarians alike, serving up all the spicy specialities such as Vindaloo and Paneer. The restaurant is ideally located on Neubaugasse, one of the liveliest streets in Neubau, and has plenty of bars around to check out after your meal.

The Museum Quarter is the cultural heart of the 7th district and home to some stylish bars and restaurants just waiting for those who have had a long day exploring the galleries. Tucked away behind the MUMOK, Glacis Beisl is self-described as ‘a stylish & intimate venue for classic and innovative Viennese cuisine, with a plant-filled garden’. This conspicuous venue is a great place for sampling local cuisine and for enjoying a summer evening in one of the city’s most vibrant and exciting areas.

Tian Bistro

Restaurant, Vegetarian, Vegan

It is rare to find a restaurant that is exclusively vegetarian, and even rarer to find one that has been awarded Michelin stars. Tian’s menu is totally meat-free and employs a refreshingly creative take on vegetarian cuisine – a welcome change from the half-hearted veggie options that often appear on menus. The founder, Christian Halper, has a strict philosophy of using fresh, seasonal ingredients, dispelling the myth of vegetarian diets consisting of ‘rabbit food’.
