The 5th district of Vienna, Margareten, is an understated area, still relatively unexplored by tourists. Check out our selection of the best places to grab a bite to eat here.

1. On

Restaurant, Chinese, Austrian

Fusing Austrian ingredients with contemporary Chinese-influenced dishes, Margareten’s On is a unique restaurant. Breaking away from the traditional Western idea of a Chinese eatery, this is a modern establishment that takes itself seriously. The dishes see various curious combinations of Eastern and Western cuisine, including tuna tartar with pumpkin oil, sea bass with sauerkraut and meats accompanied by wine from the Wachau Valley. Originally, the food was inspired by cuisine from the south of China, from an area called Wenzhou.

2. Omnom Burger

Restaurant, American, Contemporary

Gourmet burgers are having a moment and this 5th district restaurant pays perfect homage to one of the best comfort foods around. Priding themselves on using local ingredients, this joint also takes particular care to abide by ethical practises, ensuring they use recyclable materials for their take away packaging and avoiding the use of additives in their burger recipe. On the menu, you’ll find all the classics, such as cheeseburgers, as well as some interesting experiments like the no-bun burger. Veggie options are available, of course.

3. Colombo Hoppers

Restaurant, Asian

Sri Lankan cuisine is influenced by South Asian, Indian and Indonesian flavours, with the main ingredients being rice, coconut and various spices. This restaurant brings the vibrancy and atmosphere of Sri Lanka to the heart of Vienna. The lunch buffet option gives visitors the opportunity to sample a wide range of intriguing dishes, from Sri Lankan-style salads to spicy samosas, as well as exotic desserts.

4. Weinschenke

Restaurant, American

The burgers here appear ready to topple, with a tasty looking stack composed of juicy patties and fresh salad, arranged between two soft brioche buns. The chips are not your classic American fries, but thin potato discs similar to a crisp. Although beer is the conventional accompanying beverage for a burger (and Weinschenke offers a good selection), consider sampling the restaurant’s home-brewed vodka, with a variety of punchy flavours including coffee, chocolate, basil and cucumber. Veggie options are also available (halloumi or falafel).

5. Motto

This well-established restaurant is known for having a colourful clientele. The interior is impressively plush, with velvet emerald seats and stripped-down walls. On the menu, you’ll find a medley of contemporary dishes, from steak tartare to baked ham pasta, as well as traditional Austrian cuisine. The kitchen stays open until late, so it is perfect for night owls.
