The Best Places to Watch the Sunset in Santorini, Greece

A tiny picturesque port at the foot of Oia, enclosed by impressive red cliffs, Ammoudi Bay is one of the most picture-perfect spots in Santorini. This clifftop village on the caldera is often forgotten as a sunset viewpoint. Here, the sun sinks behind the small island of Thirassia. Head to Skaros, where a Venetian fortress is conveniently located for splendid, unobstructed views. Alternatively, duck into 363 Lounge at the Grace Hotel to toast the day’s end while admiring the sea view.

Love wine? You’re in luck – Santorini is known for its distinct varietals, including the native grown assyrtiko grape, which won bronze at the Decanter World Wine Awards 2019. Book a sunset wine-tasting at the Santo Wines terrace, which overlooks the caldera. For an evening to remember, choose a particular bottle to try, or sample a flight of several wines while the knowledgeable staff talk you through each one.

This path offers an excellent vantage point on a hillside to watch the sunset; there are far fewer crowds here than elsewhere on the island. Take a seat and admire the golden light as it washes over the houses of Fira below. You could even bring a bottle of Santo wine with you.

Head up towards the hillside behind Oia town to avoid the crowds. Located off a dirt road north of the little town, the hill is your best chance to enjoy the show without battling hoards of people. Remember to bring a blanket and a picnic with you, and soak it all up in solitude.

At the other end of Santorini from Oia, you’ll find the 19th-century Akrotiri lighthouse, perched on a southerly promontory. Built in 1892, it’s one of the oldest lighthouses in Greece. Get here early to nab a good parking space and vantage point. Note: it’s a rustic affair, there’s no restaurants or bars here, just an incredible panoramic view.
