Situated just north of the River Thames, Westminster is one of the best spots from which to explore London’s famous landmarks, with Big Ben, Westminster Abbey and Buckingham Palace all within a stone’s throw of each other. Here’s our pick of the best options for a hotel in Westminster.

The London borough of Westminster is a strange mix of the city’s most energetic tourists and serious-faced politicians. Attractions like Big Ben make wandering through Westminster’s streets feel like a stereotypically London experience, and staying here is a great way to make the most of the city if you’re short on time, putting you within easy reach of highlights such as the London Eye, the Imperial War Museum and Tate Britain. Throw yourself into the thick of it with a stay at one of these hotels.

The Goring Hotel

Opened in 1910, this hotel is one of the last of the Edwardian era and has plenty of period features such as large windows, floral wallpaper and feminine colours throughout. Despite the obvious draws to this luxury property – the Michelin-star dining room, extensive champagne bar list and mansion-like suites – it’s the fact that the hotel is still owned and run by the Goring family that makes this place so charming.

The Resident Victoria

Budget Hotel

Reasonably priced and well situated, The Resident Victoria (formerly The Nadler Victoria) is kitted out practically and you can tell it’s really thought about the needs of its patrons. Each room comes with a mini kitchen with a microwave, kettle and fridge, as well as blow dryers in the bathrooms. You can order in using the food delivery service of your choice, and breakfast can be provided in handy paper bags so you can eat on the go. There’s also a 24-hour reception, and you can even choose what type of pillow to sleep on. A great spot for both business and leisure trips, it’s right across the road from Buckingham Palace.

A stay at Hotel 41 is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Winner of several awards, its monochromatic Art Deco decor is achingly cool, with each room featuring mahogany sleigh beds, velvet soft furnishings and black-and-white checked carpets. On arrival, guests are greeted with a glass of bubbly from the champagne trolley, and there are sweets, ice cream and snacks available throughout the day. Each room includes a Bose music system and Penhaligon’s toiletries, while dog owners can request a pet-friendly bed for their pooch. Best of all, after 8pm you can “plunder the pantry” for breads, cheeses and other late-night snacks – perfect for satisfying those midnight munchies.

Housed in a 19th-century building, perched above a quintessentially English pub, this hotel is a masterclass in classic British accommodation. Rooms are old-world luxe in their decor, with mirrored lamps, deep greys and mauve accents. Antique rotary dial phones in each of the rooms help to bolster the vintage vibe of the spaces. The Sanctuary House is a quintessential B&B, with its traditional full English the fuel you need for a day of exploring – Buckingham Palace, the Palace of Westminster and Big Ben are just a short stroll away.

The hotel is the epitome of classic luxury: decadent beds with plush upholstered headboards in shades of silver and royal blue, mahogany furniture and twinkling chandeliers all give the effect of staying within the walls of the palace itself. With two restaurants, three bars and a lounge, there is certainly no shortage of gastronomical choices. From its iconic afternoon tea served in the Palace Lounge to some of the best curry in London at The Curry Room, the options are rich and varied.

With rooms that focus on subtle luxury, this hotel sits in another echelon of accommodation, offering a truly decadent experience.
