Visit Beacon Hill, one of the first districts in Boston, now a stately part of town, with a selection of independent stays, boutique hotels and sophisticated chains, both in and near the neighborhood.

Named after a beacon once used to warn residents of an invasion, this area, which dates to the late 1700s, bubbles with history. Walk along cobblestone streets, past redbrick townhouses and majestic period buildings, before hitting Charles Street to browse boutiques and antique stores. Pay homage to more recent history by stopping at the gold-domed Massachusetts State House (in which gay marriage was legalized) and the Bull & Finch Pub, inspiration for the sitcom Cheers.

Created by prolific Bostonian architect Charles Bulfinch during the emergent period of the district, the Flatiron building housing the Boxer has a fetching triangular shape. Rooms come with a Keurig coffee maker, mini-fridges stocked with cool drinks, L’Occitane bath products and cell chargers. Specialties at the Finch restaurant include New England clam chowder, crab cakes, fried chicken, and pan-roasted cod, with breakfasts taking on an Asian twist.

The vibe here is seductive, yet playful – rooms are decorated in bold reds paired with sleek grays and accented with slogan cushions. Kids are made especially welcome, with gifts, cribs, nightlights and even their own pet goldfish for the duration of the stay.

On the western side of Beacon Hill, a little away from the main drag, lies this ex-jailhouse, repurposed as a 298-bedroomed hotel. Two hip – and very lively – bars, plus three eateries, make it the place to be for spirited nights out (Scampo is known as one of the best restaurants in the area.) Summer days bring outdoor yoga classes, and there’s a year-round weekly program of events, including a Yappier Hour, in which you can take your dog along as you enjoy cocktails.

The Whitney Hotel

While the Whitney blends into the surroundings with an unfussy redbrick façade, the inside public areas dazzle with high ceilings, roaring fires and oak floors. The 65 rooms have organic Grown Alchemist bath products and are geared toward adults rather than family groups. If you bring a pet, your room will also come with a Lion + Wolf bed, drip module bowls and a monogrammed Whitney coat for walkies. Tuck into Sardinian and Sicilian fare at Peregrine, the Italian hotel restaurant.
