Think budget hostels in Chamonix have no character? Think again. This lively, off-beat hotel, just five minutes from the centre of Chamonix, has 148 comfortable rooms, a cosy restaurant and a cocktail bar. Life-size C3PO and R2D2 droids welcome you at check-in, while the Pac-Man motif on the ceiling hints at the retro arcade games found in the communal space. There’s plenty of après-ski action to be found on-site, too, with the cocktail bar open until midnight, live music every Wednesday and Saturday in season, along with ping-pong, pool and pétanque.

Looking for affordable accommodation in Chamonix that feels more boutique than budget? Book one of the 22 ensuite rooms at Vert Lodge, dating back to 1851; it’s one of the original purpose-built hotels in town. It’s only a 10-minute walk from the centre, and each room has a television, USB ports and free wifi. Splash out on a mountain-view room with a balcony for panoramas of Mont Blanc, or cosy up in one of the only capsule-style pod rooms in Chamonix. These feature four beds in each room, with a privacy curtain, personal lights, power sockets and fans. You’ll also have access to the sports bar, summer beer garden and restaurant with plenty of specials, including a daily happy hour from 4-6pm.

If you’re planning a family trip, group vacation or extended stay in Chamonix, Hotel Plan B is the place to book. There are three room categories: bedrooms ranging from double rooms to family suites, one- and two-bedroom apartments, and an XL bedroom that sleeps up to 10 guests in three rooms. The interiors have minimal, Scandi-chic design vibes, and there’s a free events programme to keep you entertained, including games, concerts, themed evenings, live radio shows, workshops and Latino nights. Head to the restaurant for simple yet hearty meals, such as wraps and hotdogs, that you can enjoy on the mountain-view terrace.

Immerse yourself in the rustic charm of Chamonix at this mountainside lodge. The interior is inspired by the local surroundings – think cowhide, cotton textiles and wool – and the 25 rooms are decorated with local antiques. Each room also has views of either Mont Blanc and the Bossons Glacier or Le Brévent and part of the Aiguilles Rouges. If you’re looking for something more private, book the chalet next to the hotel; it can sleep up to 11 guests. The lodge offers a half-board package that includes a breakfast buffet and a three-course dinner at the restaurant, which serves simple fare, such as hamburgers and salads. You can also arrange for a picnic basket to enjoy on the mountain.
