Formally decorated with antique-style paintings, white tablecloths and a modern edge, Café Katzung is a true gem. The menu features a decent range of traditional Austrian desserts – including apple strudel, Sachertorte and kaiserscharm. Located in the Old Town, the outdoor seating area is a great little spot for people-watching and admiring the glittering Golden Roof – one of the city’s most popular tourist attractions, which stands a few doors down from the café.

2. Breakfast Club

Coffee Shop, Austrian, Italian, Tea

This funky, modern café cites itself as ‘the Godfather of brunch in Innsbruck‘ – serving local, homemade food that will keep you fueled all day. The omelette selection is particularly generous, with lots of veggie options, including the intriguingly named Hell’s Omelette – topped with Austrian mountain cheese, onions and chili and accompanied by an organic bread basket. They source their coffee from Italy, and have soy milk available for lactose-free visitors.

Impressive latte art is one of the highlights of this modern and forward-thinking café. The staff are passionate about their craft, opting against industrial coffee and importing their beans from across the globe and roasting them directly in the store. The results are a delicious and rich flavor. Expert advice is available and there are some specialized accessories to pick up as well – such as coffee filters and pots.

4. Haepinest

Bistro, Cafe, Coffee Shop, Austrian, Tea

This specialty café and bistro is part of the ‘third wave coffee shop’ generation – a movement aiming to break away from the antiquated, conservative Viennese kaffee houses. The interior is relaxed and informal, with mismatched furniture and cozy, cushioned corners where you can curl up with a delicious cappuccino for a relaxed afternoon.

Traditionally decked out in frills, tuxedo-clad waiters and silver trays, the Café Sacher is reminiscent of Viennese coffee houses – institutions of tradition and elegance.

8. Café Bar Moustache

Cafe, Coffee Shop, Bar, Austrian, Tea

On the opposite side of Innsbruck’s traditional coffee scene, Café Bar Moustache is where to head if you want to experience the city’s younger, edgier atmosphere. The interior is beautifully decorated with palm trees and vintage furniture, and the menu features lots of brunch-style dishes, including many yummy sandwiches and salads. If coffee isn’t your choice of drink, head over in the evening for one of the best cocktails in town.

9. Maria von Burgund
