Lie-ins, milky coffee and time to actually function as a human being. To put it simply, the weekends are for brunching. Take a wander around the leafy north London suburbs of Hampstead, and work up an appetite before venturing into one of our top picks for breakfast in the area.

Wake up and smell the coffee at Ginger and White

Ginger and White

Marrying together the best bits from the Antipodean café scene with the quintessentially British ‘caff’, Ginger & White serves up greasy spoon classics all day, every day, with a revamped, modern twist in a cosy family setting. The braised baked beans with muscovado sugar on toasted potato sourdough, with chorizo, and smoked ham and cheddar bloomer with beer mustard mayo are a testament to the innovative menu. The coffee is also one of the best in north London, let alone the area, made using hand roasted beans from London roaster Square Mile.

The Alice House

The stunning décor presenting a mix of vintage glamour and urban street art, alongside the restaurant’s working library, makes The Alice House a unique spot to visit for weekend brunches. With a strong focus on the sustainability, seasonality and quality of the ingredients in their dishes, this modern and rustic lair proudly works with local farmers, butchers and fishermen to provide the finest locally sourced food.

1. The Buttery Café

Cafe, Creperie, British, European

This quaint garden café, the only licensed one in Hampstead, is the perfect weekend brunch spot. The Buttery Café offers a plethora of freshly-baked and homemade cakes and tarts (favourites include the polenta, almond and raspberry, and beetroot and seed cakes) as well as hot meals and breakfast favourites, all cooked using fresh and seasonal produce. The setting is also worth mentioning, nestled in the grounds of Burgh House, one of the largest estates to be built in the area in 1704.

2. La Crêperie de Hampstead

Food Stall, French

Enjoy a taste of Parisian street food for breakfast at this world famous crêperie, a takeaway stall that has become a landmark in north London and famous with celebrities, locals and international guidebooks. Queues can get quite long at weekends, but the delicious crêpes and galettes are well worth the wait. Put a twist on the all-day breakfast with their savoury crêpes – the ham and cheese is an unbeatable classic.

3. The Brew House

Cafe, British, Vegetarian

Serving breakfast until 11.30 am on the weekends, The Brew House offers classic breakfast dining and delightful pastries and cakes at a more than reasonable price – a full English with all the trimmings comes to £8.75. Better still is the setting of the café, nestled in the grounds of Kenwood House, a large 17th century neoclassical villa and estate surrounded by some of north London’s most precious greenery.
