French bakery Farine caters to hip millennials with its early weekday morning RMB38 ($5.50) breakfast set and location on trendy Ferguson Lane. Tucked away between the towering trees of Wukang Rd, is the entrance to the terrace, usually packed on weekends but cozy during the week. Try a butter croissant, which makes the perfect complement to a foaming latte.

Baker and Spice

Bakery, Cafe, Coffee Shop, Healthy

Baker and Spice will satisfy your craving for pastries without making you feel guilty about eating unhealthy. A popular and crowded breakfast spot at all its locations, Baker and Spice serves up pastries, cakes, and other dessert items. Try the zucchini and carrot cake for a sweet pick-me-up during the day – it will make your waistline as happy as it makes your tastebuds.

hoF, in one word, is indulgent. This decadent bakery offers up pastries and coffee but specializes in chocolate. Make a point to go during the winter months for one of the city’s best hot chocolates. Open all day, hoF doubles as a craft cocktail lounge at night.

Bunlife is nothing fancy, and it doesn’t try to be anything that it’s not. For reasonable prices, this chain offers up simple, consistently delicious pastries, breads, sandwiches, and salads. This is a great spot for a cheap, healthy lunch. The Jiashan location also makes for a nice place to get some work done in a relatively quiet environment with solid wifi.

Fika Sweden Cafe and Bakery

Bakery, Swedish

Fika is new to Shanghai, but in its short time in the city, it has gathered earnest fans both Swede and non-Swede, who are taken with the authentic Swedish coffee and pastries. The big winners here are the saffron buns and cinnamon rolls. The bakery may already have its loyal customers but remains fairly quiet during the day, making it a great retreat in the middle of the French Concession.
