Considering Austria is such a small country, it has some spectacular mountainous scenery that is certain to inspire you. Here are the views that you’ll have to work hard to reach, but which are well worth the struggle in the end.

Großglockn

The epic Eagle Walk, located in East Tyrol, is split into nine stages and is considered to be one of the most challenging hikes in all of Austria; many feel it should only be attempted by seasoned and experienced ramblers with bags of stamina. Taking you across the highest and most intimidating mountains in the country, including Großglockner and Großvenediger, with varying landscapes of rocky terrain and lush meadows, it will give you some of the most spectacular views of seemingly neverending jagged mountains that, after all the strenuous work, you will feel that you’ve well and truly earned.

Pinzgauer Spaziergang route in the Zell am See-Kaprun region

These spectacular views are undeniably beautiful, but will require much motivation before you attempt to conquer them. Although the hike isn’t particularly arduous in terms of steep climbs, it is very long and will require stamina. The picturesque mountain hike, taking you along the Eastern Alps, offers awe-inspiring views of the summit of Hohe Tauern.

The Kröndlhorn

You’ll be hard pushed to find more spectacular views than those enjoyed from the Kröndlhorn summit, located an incredible 2,444 metres (8,018 feet) above sea level. You can reach this spectacular gem by following the tour across Tyrol to Salzburger Land. Sitting proudly on top of the Kröndlhorn summit you will find a sweet chapel with space for only two people.

1. The Höhenweg ridge trail

Parts of the Stubai Valley mountain range can only be reached by attempting the terrifically challenging Stubai High Trail, a gruelling 100 kilometres (62 miles) with a total ascent and descent of around 8,000 metres (26,247 feet). Those who are well equipped will be gobsmacked by the views from the valley – sheer bliss that cannot be described in words.

Views on the Gold Medal Hike

The aptly named Gold Medal Hike takes around six hours and is full of challenging ascents and tricky terrains, but is blessed with fabulous views when you reach the summit. It is advised that you embark on the trail only if you are a confident hiker. The route begins with a trip on the Innsbruck cable car, which takes you up to Hafelekar at 2,269 metres (7,444 feet) above sea level, and then it is a four-hour stomp to Pension Finkenberg in Rum.

Kaiser Range Austria

The wild Emperor range in Austria is a real treat for hikers, with a sprawling 400 kilometres (249 miles) of forests and mountain paths to get lost in. Although it is easy to reach the general area (located around 80 kilometres or 50 miles from both Innsbruck and Salzburg), some of the prettiest spots take some serious elbow grease to discover.
