Why visit?

Why would someone want to visit Tallinn from Helsinki? The answer is actually rather simple as Tallinn is an affordable European destination full of culture, history, beautiful architecture, and excellent food. Tallinn really has something for everyone. As mentioned above, traveling to Tallinn is incredibly easy, making this one relaxing vacation.

Getting there

Now that you’re convinced, how do you get from Finland to Estonia? Several different ferry lines connect Tallinn to Helsinki (and vise versa) including Tallink Silja, Viking Line, and Eckero Line. There are nearly 30 trips per week, all year round, allowing visitors the option to see the best of Tallinn in any season.

Prices vary drastically depending on the ferry line, time of booking, date of booking, and different class options, but can start as low as 17 EUR for a one-way trip. Ferries can also accommodate cars, so those looking to experience more of Estonia have the option to book a space for their car ahead of time.

Amenities on-board

The level of comfort available on-board is high, even for those opting for standard class. Passengers can enjoy numerous restaurant options, cafes, free Wi-Fi, work stations and power outlets, and comfortable chairs. The entire ferry is very clean and offers spotless bathroom facilities with diaper changing tables (at least in the women’s bathroom).

Ample windows provide visitors with views of the Baltic Sea and seabirds passing by. The crossing is smooth, so those concerned about seasickness should have no issue.

Those looking to pamper themselves can opt to splash out on an on-board spa treatment or relaxing massage. Treatments available vary depending on the ferry line and specific boat, but in general, hot tubs and saunas are on-board, as well as a pool bar.

Another highlight for many visitors from Finland is the duty-free shopping. Shop sizes and locations depend on the ferry line and specific ship, but prices are much lower than standard prices in Finland. Stores frequently carry cosmetics, alcohol, perfume, food, toys, and tobacco products. Those ultra interested in shopping should consider booking into the Tallink Shuttle Megastar ferry as it has the large ship store and offers pre-orders.

Traveling with children

Those traveling by ferry to Tallinn fear not, as children will easily be entertained. The on-board playroom is well-stocked with safe toys, playhouses, benches for parents, and some ships even offer a “Kidz Club.” Depending on the time and date of your travel, kids may also delight in seeing Moomin characters.

Arrival

Arrival to port is simple, but slightly chaotic as visitors are looking to get off the boat and to their destination fast. After exiting the ship and the port, those arriving to Tallinn will only have a short walk (approximately 15 minutes) from the port in the Sadama district to Tallinn’s old town, its top tourist destination. From Tallinn’s medieval fortifications to its beautiful churches, visitors will certainly enjoy the enchanting atmosphere of Estonia’s beautiful capital. Enjoy your trip!
