Napa Valley isn’t only home to some of the world’s most celebrated wineries – there are also plenty of luxurious hotels nestled amongst the vineyards. From award-winning spas in expansive country barns, to deluxe cottages scattered throughout the redwoods, this is our pick of the best winery hotels in California’s Wine Country.

If you’re after seclusion in the Napa Valley, the Carneros Resort & Spa is the place to be. The private retreat is surrounded by rolling vineyards, and features both private cottages and gated luxury vacation homes that embrace indoor-outdoor living. Enjoy fresh produce from the on-site culinary garden – including fresh eggs – and handcrafted cocktails, craft beer and regional wines at the resort’s restaurant, FARM. For serious indulgence, pay a visit to the spa, which boasts two pools, an expansive fitness studio and complimentary wellness classes.

2. Meadowood

This sprawling five-star resort is set across 250 landscaped acres (100ha) set up for everything from golf and hiking to tennis and croquet. The secluded accommodation is scattered across the estate amongst live oaks, Douglas firs and maples, and includes plenty of family-friendly options – think two- to four-bedroom suites – as well as luxurious rooms and lodges perfect for a romantic getaway. The competition croquet lawns debuted in 1986, and Meadowood hosted the US Croquet Championships the same year – so don’t forget to pack your whites.

Winemakers Kathryn and Craig Hall run this luxurious hotel tucked away between the town of Yountville and the city of Napa – and it’s within walking distance of many of the region’s acclaimed wineries, including the Halls’ own. The hotel itself is situated amidst pines, redwoods and vineyards, with 43 guest rooms and suites that combine country charm with understated elegance. All rooms open onto private patios, which offer the perfect spot to soak up a Napa Valley sunrise or sunset.

4. Harvest Inn by Charlie Palmer

Staying at this charming hotel in St Helena is like stepping into another world. The heritage stone buildings are spread out over eight acres (3.2ha) in leafy cottage “neighborhoods” with landscaped gardens, fountains and vineyard views. Stay in a newly updated Vineyard View Collection room to immerse yourself in Wine Country, or opt for true seclusion in a Harvest Inn room. Once you’re settled in, take a stroll through the majestic redwoods, or simply relax poolside and enjoy a glass of wine while taking in the sweeping vineyard views.

5. Las Alcobas

Spa Hotel, Winery with Rooms

This boutique hotel overlooks the Beringer Estate Winery – the oldest continuously operating winery in Napa Valley. There’s even a private “secret” bridge that leads directly to the heart of the winery. The rooms and suites, or alcobas, have been designed by renowned interior design studio Yabu Pushelberg to evoke a sense of sanctuary. The spa is equally as chic, set in a contemporary 3,500-square-foot (325-square-meter) barn. Borrow a resort bike and explore the surrounding area, or just luxuriate by the outdoor pool.

6. The Meritage Resort and Spa

Here, it’s all about indulging the senses with an abundance of wellness activities. Yoga aficionados have the opportunity to practice yoga Wine Country-style with Vineyard Vinyasa – a deeply relaxing form of yoga on a deck overlooking the Meritage Resort vineyards. There’s also the award-winning spa, situated in a serene underground cave and offering unique treatments, including a cave-inspired stone massage and body treatments featuring Sonoma-grown lavender.

7. Vista Collina

The star of the show at Vista Collina, located opposite the Meritage Resort & Spa, is its nine tasting rooms, featuring some of Napa Valley’s best boutique wineries. Opt for a tasting inside and then enjoy a wine and picnic basket on the expansive events lawn – it’s the perfect way to experience California’s Wine Country from the comfort of your resort. The foodie experience is rounded out with on-site Napa Valley wine bars, a Fivetown Grocery and a Food & Wine Center that offers hands-on cooking classes and regular events, such as wine dinners and pairings and live music.
