9 of Vienna's Beautiful Cinemas
Vienna is full of cultural wonders, from fantastic museums to stunning churches. Put sight-seeing on pause, though, and settle down for a night at the movies inside one of these 9 nostalgic cinemas.
Admiral Kino
Located along the 7th district’s trendy cultural hotspot, Burggasse, Admiral Kino is a quaint and chic cinema boasting tastefully decorated and newly renovated interior. With a legacy that goes back over 100 years, this unique and special venue shows a wide range of independent productions, including many new releases. Every Thursday, the cinema hold ‘dog-friendly’ days, when visitors can bring their pooch along for a night at the movies.
Top Kino
An intimate two screen cinema with an attractive, low-lit bar attached that attracts crowds ranging from students to high brow film buffs. Showcasing an eclectic mix of independent films, this is a great alternative cinema to catch arthouse films and the latest Hollywood blockbusters. The cinema‘s interior, featuring Bubblegum pink paint and shabby upholstery give the interior an edgy feel.
Stadtkino
Stadtkino, one of Vienna’s oldest and prettiest cinemas, emits nostalgia on the inside and out, from the Italic plastic letters of the Marquee, down to the worn red carpets and the comforting sentimental sweet wafts of popcorn. A wonderful combination of worn down glamourous interior and up to date showings makes this a winner with tourists and locals alike.
Filmcasino
The glitzy neon italic letters at the entrance to this arthouse cinema might be deemed more appropriate if located along a strip in Las Vegas rather than on the Margarengasse. This well-established venue in the 5th district features a variety of independent film screenings; many shown in their original language. A real golden oldie with original decor, this cinema has retro red curtains, charming well-worn seats and a gorgeous retro style bar.
Bellaria Kino
Another cinema designed to tempt you down memory lane with vintage wallpaper in the foyer and twinkling eyes of Hollywood’s old stars in frames. This is reminiscent of the kind of venues used during first-date scenes in Indie-films; think innocent romance and hands accidentally meeting among the popcorn.
Metro Kino Kulturhaus
This arthouse ‘kino’ has the feeling of faded glamour. Their story began way back in the 1800s, when Josef Georg Daum opened the Elysium entertainment complex in the cellar of St. Anne’s building in Johannesgasse that was later transformed into a film theatre during the 20s. Today it is one of Vienna’s premiere cinemas, showcasing many contemporary and classic screenings and retrospectives of Austrian and International films.
Schikaneder
This movie house/nightclub/bar puts on a wonderful variety of independent film nights, as well as showing all the latest blockbuster releases. Combine a relaxing film evening with a night out, as their fantastic low-key bar lives directly next door.
Burg Kino
Regular screenings of Orson Welles’ The Third Man, an iconic classic that follows an American pulp writer through a black and white post-war Vienna, have been playing at the Burg Kino cinema for many years with no signs of ceasing. Located just around the corner from the State Opera House and the Albertina, this lovely old fashioned cinema is a popular spot for tourists; all screenings are in the English language and the location is conveniently central.
Artis International
Exclusively showing films in English, this cinema is a good one to choose if you don’t fancy a subtitled version. A range of events takes place each week including, Ladies Night, Men’s Night, an evening of Opera and Ballet and Live theatre performances.
