Sleeping four, the cabin is not far from Cardiff, but you’ll certainly feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere, with nature walks in the surrounding Vale of Glamorgan to enjoy.

Fans of Lord of the Rings will feel right at home in this abode reminiscent of a hobbit hole. Burrowed in a grassy hill just like the abode of Bilbo Baggins, 15 minutes from Hay-on-Wye and equipped with a wood-fired cooker, this home in Pengenffordd is small but charming and sleeps two.

You can’t really get more remote than an island, and this cottage near the village of Cemaes Bay on picturesque Anglesey (off the mainland’s northwest coast) is just perfect. There’s a beach on one side, and farmland on the Anglesey Coastal Path is nearby. Local wildlife includes seals, peregrine falcons and choughs, and views of Snowdonia aren’t far away.

This cottage is very much back-to-the-basics, which will be exactly what some will want from a remote retreat. There’s no wifi, the accommodation is simple (and sleeps two), and, to shower, you’ll need to walk to the nearby campsite. But, what it lacks in modern luxuries it makes up for in its stunning setting and surroundings. It is described as being surrounded by rugged countryside, with excellent walking trails right on the doorstep, and a great base to discover all that Snowdonia has to offer.

This comfortable shepherd’s hut is nestled in woodland in Crai Valley, in an area of exceptionally low light pollution. It sleeps four and has a hideaway and a treehouse for the kids. There are also a stream, a footpath to a pub 2.5mi (4km) away (you don’t want to be so remote that you can’t have a pub dinner now, do you?) and wonderful views.

This gorgeous cottage sleeps two and is hidden away in a valley in 16 acres (6.5ha) of private farmland with woodland, gardens and orchards all to yourself, plus direct access to the beach to leave you feeling perfectly remote from city stress. The wildlife you’re likely to see is another bonus, with woodpeckers, squirrels, foxes, badgers, owls and, if you go the short way to the coast, dolphins and seals in the vicinity.
