Zum See, which is in a tiny hamlet between Zermatt and Furi, is one of the few places in the landlocked Alps where top-quality seafood can be found. The Omnia Restaurant, run by the hotel of the same name, is a favorite of locals and travelers alike. Chef Stephan Kriegelstein’s menu is as distinctly Swiss as it is cosmopolitan, using ingredients like quark, soy, Wagyu beef and guinea fowl. An extensive vegetarian menu is available, as well as over 200 wines. The contemporary decor and roaring fireplace make Omnia, which is located in the town center, a good spot for unwinding after hours outdoors.

Perched on a mountainside overlooking Zermatt, Restaurant Alexandre combines old-world luxury with breathtaking views of the Matterhorn. Both set menus and a la carte dishes are available, featuring seasonal ingredients like veal and wild mushrooms. The restaurant is just a short tram ride away from town, and opens only for dinner.

Ristorante Capri

Zermatt is located right on the Swiss-Italian border, so it should come as no surprise that plenty of good Italian food is available in the town. Capri is the cream of the crop, with a menu that has earnt it a Michelin star. Items such as turbot cooked in a salt crust with champagne sauce, and beef served with Neapolitan bitter chicory bring an authentic and stylish taste of the Mediterranean to this Swiss town.

With a kitchen that stays open until 1am, pizza made on the spot in a wood-fired oven, and a decent vegetarian menu to boot, Grampi’s is the kind of unpretentious, welcoming Italian restaurant where you can sit and chat with friends for hours. A highlight of the menu is the “Raclettissima” pizza, which is, as the name suggests, a raclette (cheese with silverskin onions and gherkins) in pizza form.

Gitz-Gädi

Restaurant, Asian, Canadian

This rustic, mountain restaurant is the place to go for hearty soups, four different types of fondue, and classic alpine cuisine. Also on offer are nine innovative variations of cordon bleu. Be sure to try the “nashi” version, with Asian pear and gorgonzola cheese, and the “silvana”, breaded with cornflakes and served with a tarragon sauce. On a sunny day, the terrace is an excellent spot for a leisurely lunch with family or in large groups. If you need it, you can get a free toboggan ride back into town too.

Restaurant Stockhorn

The chalet-style, wood-panelled interior of Stockhorn is an appropriately old-fashioned setting for the grilled meats that are the restaurant’s speciality. The leg of lamb is especially tender, as is the venison. Stockhorn is perhaps less swanky than other more upmarket restaurants in Zermatt, but they certainly know how to barbecue perfectly.

Findlerhof

Findlerhof stands out among the many mountain restaurants in the area, partly thanks to its well-positioned patio. A table on the patio comes with an impressive view of the Matterhorn, as well as the town center. The proprietors Franz and Heidi Schwery have been delighting diners with their menu of traditional dishes for well over 20 years. Don’t miss the Matterkuchen quiche.
