Metz’s history spans some 3,000 years, famous for its gothic cathedral and German imperial district. It’s also one of France’s greenest cities with kilometres of tree-lined riverside paths and flowers in bloom during the summer months. During the day, try some classic quiche lorraine, before perusing the city’s museums and galleries. Come nightfall, Place de la Comedie is the best place to see Metz’s illuminated cathedral, opera theatre and Temple Neuf. Built in 1559 on the orders of King Henry II, the fortress was intended to protect the city after reclaiming it from the Roman Empire.
