Brussels is known worldwide for its chocolate and the best way to enjoy it in the chillier months is by drinking it. Here are some of the best places in Brussels, from a brasserie to a food truck, to go and enjoy a luxurious cup of cacao on a cold day.
At heart a busy brasserie, L’Ultime Atome was one of the first Brussels restaurants to offer deconstructed hot chocolate; a glass of hot milk and a jar of pure dark chocolate nibs. Mixing the hot milk with the chocolate, nib by nib, is almost therapeutic. The brasserie also offers other hot chocolate options but sticking to the classic you can’t go wrong. The L’Ultime Atome is located in the heart of the Ixelles district and offers also a great selection of food and beers. Whatever you’re drinking, you can do it inside or out on their terrace in the crisp winter sunshine.

Vroom Vroom Coffee
Part of the food truck craze taking over Belgium by storm, Vroom Vroom Coffee is an espresso bar on wheels. The vintage truck can be seen at different festivals as well as close to the student campuses of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel or the Université libre de Bruxelles. Among the large choice of coffees, the owner also serves up wonderfully indulgent marshmallow filled hot chocolate to enjoy on the go.

Once a haberdashery (mercerie), La Mercerie is now an intimate tea and coffee house which also serves food and a great brunch over the weekend. Their choice of hot chocolate is limited to two; with whipped cream or marshmallows. But both are worth the detour to Place Flagey to try out. The small corner street place can be easily missed so look out for it, you will not be disappointed.

Founded in 1912 and located in Matonge, Maison Renardy has been a family business ever since. At its core Maison Renardy is more a tea house, however it also offers a varied selection of hot chocolates to enjoy in the cozy café. The Tanzanian hot chocolate with 73 percent cacao is truly special. Tea and hot chocolate can be enjoyed alongside the most delicious cakes for a perfect afternoon treat.
