There are dog walks, and then there’s hiking through the Sierra Nevada with your furry friends. Finding somewhere in the vicinity of Lake Tahoe that is pet-friendly, however, can be somewhat challenging – whether you’re visiting the California or Nevada side. It may seem like many hotels don’t allow pets, but in reality there are plenty of high-quality options that are well outfitted with amenities to comfort your creatures. Read on for the best pet-friendly hotels in Lake Tahoe, bookable with Culture Trip.

1. Station House Inn, for an unbeatable location

The location of this dog-friendly hotel in Lake Tahoe is hard to beat. It’s just a few minutes’ walk from both the south shore of the lake and the Heavenly Mountain Gondola, which will sweep you 2.4mi (3.9km) up into the mountains. After a day of exploring, guests can recharge in the on-site restaurant Toulouse, which serves New Orleans dishes like gumbo and po-boys, or unwind in front of the 55-inch television that’s included in every room.

2. Basecamp Tahoe City, for campfire-like cool

A lobby bar with craft beer on tap, daily happy hours and an outdoor fire pit area where you can roast s’mores are just a few of the ways this Lake Tahoe hotel woos its guests. Its location is a big hit, too. Set in the downtown area of Tahoe City, it’s moments away from the north shore of the lake, its beaches and some great dog walking trails. Please note that pet-friendly rooms must be booked by telephone.

3. Beach Retreat and Lodge at Tahoe, for lakeside dining

This is one of the few dog-friendly hotels in Lake Tahoe that’s right on the edge of the water. You can see the lake from some of the rooms, as well as from the Tiki Bar – the Sneaky Tiki cocktail comes highly recommended – and the Boathouse restaurant, where the menu features dishes like coconut shrimp and short rib cheeseburgers. If you want to dine with your dog, meanwhile, there’s a pet-friendly picnic area on the hotel’s pier.

5. Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe Resort, for endless facilities

Pet-friendly hotels in Lake Tahoe don’t come with many more facilities than the Hyatt Regency. Located on the waterfront on the north shore of the lake, the hotel has a heated outdoor pool, which can be entered from inside the hotel on colder days, a casino with 17 gaming tables, a spa and a long list of bars and restaurants – don’t miss the chance to have a drink at the 111 Bar on the hotel’s floating pier.

6. 3 Peaks Resort & Beach Club, for the two-level hot tub

The rooms and suites at this dog-friendly South Lake Tahoe hotel have a cozy, mountain cabin look to them. They come with elements like wooden feature walls and tree branch lampstands, and they all have bark color schemes. Beyond the rooms, there are plenty of facilities. The hotel is home to a barbecue and picnic area, a seasonal heated pool, a two-level hot tub and its own strand of private beach, which is located two blocks away.

7. Basecamp South Lake Tahoe, for live music and daily happy hours

The hotel makes it easy to relax after a day of walking, kayaking or swimming. There’s a beer garden that puts on regular live music, a spa deck with a fire pit and mountain views, and a Hideaway bar that offers daily happy hours.

8. Hotel Azure, for easy access to both the slopes and the lake

For those who want an equal opportunity between relaxing on the shores of Lake Tahoe and carving fresh powder in the upper reaches of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, the Hotel Azure offers easy access to both. Heavenly Mountain ski resort is a short drive away, and the lakeside beach is even closer. The 99 rooms are spacious, with microwaves and modern furniture. As far as your four-legged friends go, there is a fee, but dog bowls, beds and treats are offered on arrival. The hotel also has a gym, pool, spa and restaurant, and various activities are bookable on site, including dog-friendly mountain biking.

9. The Landing Resort and Spa, for stellar mountain views

Just on the California side of the state line in South Lake Tahoe, the Landing is equally popular among outdoorsy types and those wishing to head into Nevada for a spot of gambling. In either case, guests will appreciate the spacious rooms with their fireplaces and stunning views out towards the mountains. There’s a heated pool and a large restaurant, and pet owners can expect a fee per dog for their stay, with a grass area to give them some exercise. Dogs can be left unattended, but only if they’re crated first.

10. The Coachman Hotel, for doggy goodie bags

Also in South Lake Tahoe, yards from the shore of the lakeside beach and marina, the Coachman Hotel is an ideal place to stay if you want to spend most of your time on or near the water. Likewise, your pooches can enjoy the experience for a fee, provided they are always attended. They will be well looked after, though, with goodie bags on arrival and water points throughout the hotel. The rooms come complete with big flatscreen TVs, fridges and mini-bars, and you can grab a coffee at the cafe or a beer and a hearty meal in the bar/lounge area.
