Reached from the main island of Malta by a 20 minute ferry ride, visitors and locals flock year round to the smaller sister island Gozo in search of eco-tourism, unspoiled countryside, and a less hectic day-to-day atmosphere. Dining options aplenty, here’s a guide to the very best of them.

Tmun Mgarr

Interior of Tmun Mgarr

Tmun Mgarr is situated right above the seashore, on the banks of Mgarr harbor. Walking in from the Gozo ferry’s drop-off point, it is clear this restaurant sets high standards for the Gozitan culinary landscape. It is run by husband and wife team Jane and Leli Buttigieg who have been serving meat dishes, pasta and a range of seafood specialities for more than 25 years. Particularly worth noting is the couple’s very own Bouillabaisse soup, made using no less than seven varieties of fish.

Maldonado Bistro

Maxokk

Strictly speaking Maxokk is not a restaurant, but more of a bakery. There is no seating area, no indoors where guests can hang out, and yet on a busy day, this place has some of the longest lines in Malta of locals and foreigners waiting to be fed. The speciality and must for any foodie visiting the island is their Gozitan Ftira. Looks a lot like a pizza but made with the same dough used to make local flat-bread. The set of topping options are rich in rustic flavors of capers, olives, Gozitan cheese, and anchovies.

Ta’ Vestru

Seafood pasta

Located in a house on the village square of the small rural village of Qala, Ta’ Vestru is a small family run restaurant serving generous portions of traditional Maltese food and an array of international crowd pleasers for the less adventurous. Food at this establishment may take a while to leave the kitchen, yet this should only put guests’ mind to rest as to the authenticity of its preparation. Seafood pasta dishes, rabbit stew, and the lamb are particularly noteworthy. The size of the portions cannot be overemphasized enough, making for good value for money.

Ta’ Karolina

Tucked away in a secluded corner of Xlendi bay slightly removed from the adjacent complex of restaurants, Ta’ Karolina carries the name of a natural cave in the vicinity. It is consistently popular with locals, who are attracted to the venue mainly by word of mouth. Though the restaurant serves anything from pasta to meat dishes, the order of the day is usually fish and seafood. The outdoor terrace is only meters away from the seashore and, depending on the time of day, it is more than probable guests get to observe local fisherman bringing in their catch or handling nets close to their huts.

Since you are here, we would like to share our vision for the future of travel - and the direction Culture Trip is moving in.

Culture Trip launched in 2011 with a simple yet passionate mission: to inspire people to go beyond their boundaries and experience what makes a place, its people and its culture special and meaningful — and this is still in our DNA today. We are proud that, for more than a decade, millions like you have trusted our award-winning recommendations by people who deeply understand what makes certain places and communities so special.

Increasingly we believe the world needs more meaningful, real-life connections between curious travellers keen to explore the world in a more responsible way. That is why we have intensively curated a collection of premium small-group trips as an invitation to meet and connect with new, like-minded people for once-in-a-lifetime experiences in three categories: Culture Trips, Rail Trips and Private Trips. Our Trips are suitable for both solo travelers, couples and friends who want to explore the world together.

Culture Trips are deeply immersive 5 to 16 days itineraries, that combine authentic local experiences, exciting activities and 4-5* accommodation to look forward to at the end of each day. Our Rail Trips are our most planet-friendly itineraries that invite you to take the scenic route, relax whilst getting under the skin of a destination. Our Private Trips are fully tailored itineraries, curated by our Travel Experts specifically for you, your friends or your family.

We know that many of you worry about the environmental impact of travel and are looking for ways of expanding horizons in ways that do minimal harm - and may even bring benefits. We are committed to go as far as possible in curating our trips with care for the planet. That is why all of our trips are flightless in destination, fully carbon offset - and we have ambitious plans to be net zero in the very near future.
