Hip, dynamic and continually evolving, Kolkata’s Salt Lake City, or Bidhannagar, is among the city’s must-visit neighborhoods. We’ve compiled this guide to help you get the most out of this bustling area in a day.

Morning

Start your day at Salt Lake’s Central Park, the city’s second largest open green space—after the Maidan in Central Kolkata. Built around a large lake, on which you can go boating, this park boasts of seemingly endless vast green lawns and rich flora and fauna. It is home to a variety of aquatic birds from egrets to lesser whistling ducks. It also happens to be home to several themed gardens, from a colorful butterfly garden to a well-maintained rose garden.

Once you’re satisfied with your dose of nature, hit up one of the neighborhood’s many acclaimed restaurants. 6 Ballygunge Place in Sector 1 is among Kolkata’s most cherished authentic Bengali food restaurants. There are few better places to have your multiple-course meal than in this heritage bungalow that’s over a century old and surrounded by walls adorned with pictures of old Calcutta.

If you’d like a break from traditional Bengali food and sample the neighborhood’s enthusiasm for other cuisines, then check out Oudh 1590, steeped in old-world charm and serving some of the city’s finest Mughlai food.
