Lava fields, geothermal pools and scenery sculpted by looming cones promise to ignite your wanderlust on these trips to volcanic lands.

Destructive; regenerative; mercurial – it’s easy to see why volcanoes have been the subject of fascination, mythology and fear for as long as we’ve been around. Being close to a volcano is to experience the magnitude of the earth’s power unlike anything else – and you don’t even have to be within singeing-distance of a lava flow either. These hikes explore unforgettable volcanic landscapes safely – from the unique biology of the Galápagos to the fertile slopes of Sicily’s Mount Etna.

Sip volcanic coffee in Costa Rica

Lush, rainforest-blanketed Costa Rica is a wildlife lover’s paradise – home to sloths, birds of paradise and jaguars. It’s also one of the world’s main coffee-producing capitals, thanks to its fertile volcanic soil – and this nine-day tour gives you the best of both worlds, as well as a splash of surfing on the Pacific coast. You’ll start with a locally guided tour of its vibrant capital, San José, before heading off to the Arenal volcano for a locally-harvested, freshly-roasted cup of joe. You’ll be staying at a gorgeous lodge near Arenal, which takes advantage of the area’s bountiful natural hot springs, so you can soak off in between jungle safaris, waterfall hikes and white-water rafting excursions.

A person walks through the central volcanic ridge, a succession of old cones and craters occupied by small lakes, Pico Esperanca is the highest point of the island

Absorb the great outdoors in The Azores

Scattered like jewels in the Atlantic, the Azores are a chain of volcanic islands seemingly tailor-made for adventure holidays. This six-day trip is as action-packed as you can get, starting with a walking tour of the islands’ capital Ponta Delgada, before cycling around – and kayaking across – volcanic crater lakes the following day. Next, it’s whale spotting in the islands’ wildlife-rich waters, followed by a bracing dip beneath a roaring waterfall, and a more soothing soak in some natural hot springs. There’s more waterfall action to come, with rappelling across one next on the agenda, before finishing with a cooking class using the islands’ natural geothermal heat to prepare a traditional meal in Furnas.

Since you are here, we would like to share our vision for the future of travel - and the direction Culture Trip is moving in.

Culture Trip launched in 2011 with a simple yet passionate mission: to inspire people to go beyond their boundaries and experience what makes a place, its people and its culture special and meaningful — and this is still in our DNA today. We are proud that, for more than a decade, millions like you have trusted our award-winning recommendations by people who deeply understand what makes certain places and communities so special.

Increasingly we believe the world needs more meaningful, real-life connections between curious travellers keen to explore the world in a more responsible way. That is why we have intensively curated a collection of premium small-group trips as an invitation to meet and connect with new, like-minded people for once-in-a-lifetime experiences in three categories: Culture Trips, Rail Trips and Private Trips. Our Trips are suitable for both solo travelers, couples and friends who want to explore the world together.

Culture Trips are deeply immersive 5 to 16 days itineraries, that combine authentic local experiences, exciting activities and 4-5* accommodation to look forward to at the end of each day. Our Rail Trips are our most planet-friendly itineraries that invite you to take the scenic route, relax whilst getting under the skin of a destination. Our Private Trips are fully tailored itineraries, curated by our Travel Experts specifically for you, your friends or your family.

We know that many of you worry about the environmental impact of travel and are looking for ways of expanding horizons in ways that do minimal harm - and may even bring benefits. We are committed to go as far as possible in curating our trips with care for the planet. That is why all of our trips are flightless in destination, fully carbon offset - and we have ambitious plans to be net zero in the very near future.
