Jürgen Cafe

Jürgen Café is known for its delectable, and distinctly Ecaudorian bread. Its method of making artisan bread has been passed down since 1894 over four generations. Breakfasts here include dishes such as Eggs Benedict and the Jürgen breakfast of an omelet and fruit. All breakfasts include coffee and juice.

For breakfast or brunch in Quito, it’s hard to beat The Magic Bean. Familiar American dishes such as omelets, waffles and pancakes pair perfectly with fresh Ecaudorian juices and smoothies such as traditional Maracuya (passion fruit). The Magic Bean prides itself on organic, fresh food that can please everyone (including vegetarians) for breakfast, lunch or dinner. There are two locations—one just a block from Carolina Park and the other conveniently located in the tourist district of La Mariscal.

Europa Cafe

This adorable cafe is located inside the Dann Carlton Hotel on La Republica El Salvador. Ecaudorian chocolate products line the shelves of this tiny shop, so you can buy some tasty souvenirs.

Tianguez

Underneath the church of Plaza San Francisco, Tianguez is a great location to start the day in Centro Historico (Historic Center). Built in the area where the large indigenous market once stood in the pre-colonial era, the plaza in now lined with buildings that date back to the 16th century. The coffee here comes highly recommended and goes well with empanadas or a humita and fresh juice. Be sure to explore the artisan store just beside the restaurant before you leave.

Cafe Jaru

For coffee lovers, or anyone with a sweet tooth, Cafe Jaru is the perfect spot to escape Quito’s busy streets. Located on República de El Salvador, the cafe’s exposed brick walls are lined with bookshelves offering both English and Spanish literature. Café Jaru’s coffee, made from Ecaudorian beans, ranges from traditional espresso drinks (Italian-style) to the popular Maple Latte. There’s a range of breakfast dishes and pastries such as Pan Guzzini, a sweet pastry redolent of monkey bread.

La Casa de Rafa

A short trek from the center of Quito you will find La Casa de Rafa. This tiny house captures the feel of the countryside as it is set in the valley of Tumbaco. On Saturday and Sunday the house provides a large organic buffet teaming with meats, cheeses, fruits and a variety of bread, jams, coffee and fruit juices.
