Being the last month of the year and the true start of summer in Rio de Janeiro, this month is hot — both metaphorically and literally. With a huge line up of parties, live samba shows and of course, the famous New Year’s Eve on Copacabana beach, this month is one to remember. Get your dancing shoes on and jump straight into some of the best parties going on this December in Rio.


MUSIC | Embrace the Rio spirit with Samba da Saude

📅 Thursday, December 1st

Christmas may be approaching, but in the minds of Cariocas that means that Carnival is coming, too. This month will bring plenty of live samba band sessions (known as rodas de samba) and it starts on the 1st day of the month. The trio Zeh Gustavo, Raphael Moreira and Alexandre Nadai from Samba da Saude will perform a live event at Largo de São Francisco da Prainha for free.

FOOD | Get involved with Rio’s latest trend: the food trucks

Palaphita Gavea, one of Rio’s hottest clubs, has jumped on the bandwagon and started hosting food truck events, much to the joy of residents in the city. The club itself is trendy, smart and a place to dress-to-impress. This event will start at 7 p.m. with various food trucks and guest chefs offering a taste of some of the most innovative food in the city.

EXHIBITION | Marvel at the Gallery of Values

The Culture Center of Banco do Brasil will present an exhibition with more than 2,000 pieces of currency, including notes and coins to explore the history of currency in Brazil and the world. The exhibition presents the immense collection of currency that Banco do Brasil holds and aims to talk about money in a fun, light way.

MUSIC | Enjoy live samba with Projeto Vespertina

One of the most liveliest and fun rodas de samba in Rio, Projeto Vespertina, will perform live on Fridays from 6:30 p.m. at Beco das Sardinhas, one of the most traditional samba joints in the city. Beco das Sardinhas is in the city center, famous for its cheerful and friendly atmosphere.

The Racionais MCs are a hip-hop/rap band from São Paulo. The band was formed by members from the ring of favelas that encircle São Paulo, and its songs depict favela life, gangster imagery, police brutality and social injustice. Vida Loka is one of the most well-known songs that will be performed at this show.

Arruma o Coreto will present the Brazilian genre chorinho in an outdoor performance at Praça São Salvador, a public square that attracts a mixed crowd every weekend for laidback drinking and listening to live music.

At the Cidade das Artes there will be an event that displays the works of several artists who make model boats in miniature designs. When Renato Russo died in 1996, it also marked the end of legendary Brazilian band Legião Urbana. Later on, a band of musicians came together to perform the best hits of Legião Urbana and tour around Brazil performing live shows, being the next best thing to the iconic rock band. The band is set to perform at Circo Voador, a music and event hotspot in Rio.
