Bondi Beach may be the most famous coastal neighbourhood in Sydney – but just to the south lies the equally beautiful suburb of Coogee, complete with its own stunning beach. While it’s hardly a hidden gem, it is slightly less busy than Bondi. Popular among backpackers but also families, much of the accommodation in the area consists of holiday rentals (both houses and apartments), along with a smattering of hotels near the beach. Here are some of the top choices in Coogee, all bookable via Culture Trip.

1. Coogee Bay Hotel, for a snazzy sea view

Beach bums will love this hotel’s location, directly across from Coogee Beach. Its bright, beachy rooms feature splashes of oceanic colour and marble bathrooms; most sleep two people in comfortable king beds or two singles (families can book interconnected rooms). Plenty of spaces have private balconies, and some have sea views. The hotel has its own restaurant, Marrah, serving upscale dishes inspired by Aussie pub food; there’s also a bar and beer garden on site – expect things to get a little lively outside on occasion.

2. Luxury Coogee Home with pool and parking

This extraordinarily well-equipped rental has all the amenities you’ll need for a trip to Sydney with family or friends. There’s wifi, a full kitchen, air conditioning, parking, a fireplace and barbecue, but the pièce de resistance is the saltwater pool in the yard. With a wooden deck and covered gazebo for outdoor dining and garden with desert and tropical plants, it’s a real oasis. The house has four bedrooms with double or king beds, and three bathrooms, allowing everyone in your party a little extra privacy.

3. Adina Apartment Hotel Coogee, for affordability and beach proximity

The Coogee location of this Australian-made hotel chain offers relatively affordable apartments in a primo location 200m (650ft) from the beach. Expect self-contained apartments decked out in an eclectic mix of colours and textures — in-room amenities include all the basics like an LCD TV, speedy wifi, an iron and desks. The one- and two-bedroom options also come with a full kitchen, washing machine and dryer (although studio apartments have no laundry and only a kitchenette). There are also meeting rooms, a gym and a dazzling indoor pool on the premises.

5. The Field Villa, for great bars and beaches nearby

This spacious family home is ideal for relaxation, with a living room that opens out onto a veranda and grassy backyard. Indoors, there’s a modern mix of white walls and wood floors throughout the three-bedroom property, which has a full kitchen and satellite TV connection. Plus, its location checks multiple boxes: bars and eateries of Coogee Bay Road and the beach are five minutes away on foot, but the rental is tucked away on a tranquil street away from the crowds. Be warned: the property has a strict policy against party tourists.

6. Absolute Water Front Coogee, for retro-beach-house beauty

This three-bedroom rental occupies a truly prime piece of Sydney real estate, perched high on the coast with a splendid view of rocky Gordons Bay, and a five-minute walk from Coogee Beach. The apartment has a charmingly retro Australian beach house feel to it, with plenty of big sliding windows and doors to let the sea breeze in. It sleeps up to six across two double and two single beds, and while it’s not as splashy as some of the properties around, all your bases are covered with a full kitchen, washing machine, dryer, wifi and spacious living room with balcony.

7. Green and pleasant peace at Tranquil Tree Top Hideaway

A great no-fuss option for a vacation rental, the Tranquil Tree Top Hideaway is an apartment in a retro Aussie suburban brick apartment block. It’s a renovated space with clean white walls, cream carpeting, and simple yet comfy furniture. It has room for four, with two double beds in two bedrooms, and all the necessities like wifi, a stovetop and laundry facilities, plus a balcony set amid the eucalyptus trees outside. While it’s a little further from the beach (15 to 20 minutes on foot), it’s located in a refreshingly green and quiet corner of Coogee.

The full kitchen and bathroom have shining new fixtures — the same goes for the terrace, which also comes with its own barbecue. The location is central, too: Coogee Beach and the restaurants and cafes on Coogee Bay Road are both two to three minutes away on foot. Step out and you’ll be spoiled for choice.
