Bowen is a small town that will make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. It’s all about the great outdoors here – visit underwater sculptures, take snaps of local murals and join the walk to the North Head Lighthouse, made when the tide gets so low that you can cross the bay towards it. 1. Coral Cove Apartments, for lazy poolside days

There are five different options – including the three-bedroom penthouse apartments, which have a lounge with soft leather sofas, a dining area and a large balcony that overlooks the ocean. Relax there or by the pool, or take to the water and go kayaking or snorkelling around the reefs to see the colourful marine life.

Looking for a practical pit stop? Choose the Ocean View Hotel – set on 3.6ha (nine acres) of land overlooking the ocean. Eight pristine beaches are within a 10-minute drive. Twin, double and king-sized rooms are available and there’s a family room complete with bunk beds. Rooms have kitchen facilities – but home-cooked meals can also be delivered to your door.

During the day, relax under the sail shades that cover the saltwater pool – and in the evening, kick back in the beer garden, enjoy a sausage sizzle on the barbecue or take a seat in the restaurant and savour locally caught seafood.

Here, you’ll enjoy candy-coloured cabins overlooking Horseshoe Bay. Rooms sleep from three to six people and include double beds, a kitchenette and a TV. The famed bay is just a short walk from the resort – and if you want to discover more, you can join walking trails that wind around the clifftops or go scuba diving in coral-filled bays.
