Three of Sydney’s leading cultural institutions have joined forces to establish a major new art exhibition, The National: New Australian Art, supporting Australian artists at various points in their careersThis exciting announcement is bound to not only capture the nation and its place in the artistic world, but is without a doubt one of the most exciting things to happen to Australian art in years.

Presenting the latest ideas and forms of contemporary Australian art, The National exhibition will express the individual voices of each of the three joining institutions: the Art Gallery of New South Wales (AGNSW), Carriageworks and the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia (MCA). With a planned six-year run, this event will be a biennial exhibition, occurring on alternating years (three editions held in 2017, 2019 and 2021) alongside the international-focused Biennale of Sydney.

With Sydney’s continuing showcase of artwork throughout various eras, this new major exhibition will show the extent to which each of these institutions is committed to portraying and introducing the public to the local art of Australia. Dr. Michael Brand, Director of the AGNSW, said ‘This major new initiative highlights what Sydney’s leading art institutions do best, that is, create a vibrant cultural life for the city and state.’

A collaborative array of emerging, mid-career and established Australian artists across the country, alongside Australian artists living overseas and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists, will be commissioned to produce new artworks for each edition of the exhibition. Not only will this produce substantial opportunities for these artists to develop their profession, but they will gain great exposure across the nation, and further afield around the world.

The Director at Carriageworks, Lisa Havilah, commented: ‘The National: New Australian Art will chart the rich diversity of contemporary practice featuring artists that work in dialogue with other disciplines including performance, dance, music and screen. Over the six years and three iterations, the project will make a significant investment in Australian artists through the extensive commissioning of new work that reflects contemporary Australia and our place in the world.’

Becoming the only large-scale, multi-venue exhibition series held in Sydney with a sole focus on contemporary Australian art, The National will feature many exciting free events that will be announced closer to the event dates.

The National: New Australian Art 2017 will exhibit at Carriageworks and the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia from 30 March to 18 June 2017, and at the Art Gallery of New South Wales from 30 March to 16 July 2017.
