Rites of Passage (ROP) returns to the city for the fifth year, setting up shop in one of Melbourne’s most iconic world heritage buildings, the Royal Exhibition Building, for a packed weekend celebrating tattoos, art, music and culture. In 2015 the festival took visitors on a journey to learn about Japanese tattoo culture, while this year’s theme is Neo-Traditional Tattooing and its historical influences. Paying homage to the traditional style of tattooing with its bold lines, heavy colours and limited shading, neo-traditional tattooing adds a modern twist to these elements, including introducing more diverse imagery and displaying them in a ‘traditional’ style. As the biggest tattoo festival in the Southern hemisphere, Rites of Passage promises to be an unmissable event for tattooists and fans of body art.
