John Olsen: The You Beaut Country

Picture of Culture Trip
Updated: 30 May 2016
As part of their Spring/Summer program, the National Gallery of Victoria presents John Olsen: The You Beaut Country. This comprehensive survey examines seven decades of work from one of Australia’s most celebrated artists. The collection will showcase Olsen’s artistic development from a Sydney student in the early 1950s to his studies abroad in Europe and the You Beaut country series in the 1960s. See how the filling of Lake Eyre inspired these works, as well as his more recent artistic endeavours. Olsen’s distinctively abstract views of the Australian landscape helped shape the country’s artistic history, and the collection’s key works include Where the bee sucks, there suck I 1984-1986, Journey into the you beaut country no. 1 1961 and Calle estracha 1986, allowing visitors toobserve his most significant work in one exhibition.
