Japan’s subtropical climate lends itself to the bamboo groves which have become a quintessential part of the country’s landscape. In the exhibition Bamboo: Tradition in Contemporary Form, bamboo weaving will take center stage with 22 contemporary and five traditional bamboo sculptures. The exhibition will be accompanied by a series of historical paintings, lacquer ware, musical instruments, hand-printed books and woodblock prints taken from NGV’s collection as well as private collectors. The free exhibition will run from July until October in the Art of Japan Gallery on level 1 at the National Gallery of Victoria.
