In Hawaiian, ‘Kama’aina’ means child of the land and ‘Grindz’ refers to the Hawaiian slang word for eating. Chef and owner Dean Shinagawa was born and raised in Oahu, Hawaii. When he moved to Seattle in 1995 he began to miss the island flavors he grew up with. Kama’aina Grindz is a casual restaurant that serves Hawaiian fusion cooking. Shinagawa’s recipes blend Hawaiian flavors with modern techniques and Asian cuisine. Start with a mini Spam musubi, a popular Hawaiian dish of grilled Spam atop rice and wrapped in seaweed.
