Picture of Hannah Phillips
Updated: 10 August 2017

With trendy, independent boutiques in almost every neighborhood, Austin is becoming as much a fashionista’s paradise as it is a destination for foodies and music-lovers. Along with all the emerging local labels, the city is home to plethora of vintage shops, thrift stores, and flea markets. Culture Trip has rounded up the top spots to go hunting for bargains.

Room Service Vintage

Room Service Vintage

The first place to direct anyone hunting for vintage rarities and thrifty finds is North Loop Boulevard. Lined with countless thrift stores and second-hand shops, plus a few eateries and cocktail bars, the street is a one-stop shop for the bargain shopper. Room Service is one of the best, a 3,500-square foot space in an old pharmacy, packed with everything from furniture, jewelry, home décor, artwork, books, and more. Established in 1981, the store recently celebrated over 35 years as a favorite central Austin establishment. Be sure to follow their Instagram, where they post the latest finds: if you see something you like, call the store to reserve an item for up to two hours.

Rave On Vintage Home Furnishings

Just down the road from Room Service is Rave On, one of Austin’s newer little shops – also located on North Loop, but across Lamar Boulevard and closer to Burnet Road. Appropriately situated in a converted 1960s house, the store specializes in quality mid-century modern home furnishings and décor. Owners Mike Hooker and Chelsea Wine travel the country in search of exciting vintage relics from the 50s and 60s, laying out their inventory like you would in your own home. You won’t regret stopping by to browse each of the gorgeously decorated rooms.

Top Drawer

As you continue your thrifting tour of north central Austin, keep driving west down North Loop after your visit to Rave On. Top Drawer is just a hop away, one of Burnet Road’s best bargain destinations. The shop regularly hosts a Saturday markets with outside vendors, and the wares are worth a visit any day of the week. Featuring home furnishings at killer prices, kitchen appliances, lighting, artwork, clothing, shoes and records – you could easily spend hours in this tiny but bursting little gem of a store.

Austin Pets Alive! Thrift

Just a little further up Burnet Road, bargain hunters can browse for a good cause at Austin Pets Alive! Thrift. As the county’s largest no-kill community, Austin is committed to saving 90% of animals that enter the city’s shelters. Through innovative programs like the Puppy Parvo ICU and Dog Behavior Program, local charity Austin Pets Alive! has played a critical role in serving the city’s animals. In 2017, the group launched the city’s first and only thrift store benefitting local, at-risk animals, where all proceeds go towards APA! programs.
