Firehouse is the ideal place to knock back a few local beers of an evening. Inexpensive drinks, friendly staff and great local music make this one of Houston’s best dancehalls. Bartenders are sociable, generous with liquor and quick to deliver drinks so the bar is never overly crowded with people waiting to be served. The decoration is traditional country, with cowboy boots hanging from the rafters and vintage signage.

At first, it might seem strange to have a bar within a department store. However, after a day of shopping, it makes a lot of sense. Forget your achy feet at Bar 12, located at the top floor of Saks Fifth Avenue. The bar is as stylish as the store, with sophisticated mixed drinks. The menu is also surprisingly well-rounded, with everything from shrimp cocktails to a bacon cheeseburger provided by 51fifteen, the in-store restaurant downstairs.

The Tasting Room
The Tasting Room is a lovely wine bar with a long wine list, an open patio and live music. The patio is breezy, relaxing and downright delightful, while the interior is elegant, modern and cozy. The food is out of this world; savory pork sausage, crispy pizza, tender steak. The long opening hours make this a great place to have brunch or lunch and enjoy delicious mimosas or other wine-based cocktails later in the day.

Muldoon’s the Patio

The Concert Pub
This is mainly a sports bar, but with a musical twist, as it’s a music venue as well. They host local cover and tribute bands and a live DJ on weekends, as well as happy hours, crawfish boils and steak nights; check the website for listings and dates. Revolve Kitchen + Bar
Housed within Houston’s Hotel Derek is Revolve, a great place for a quick but satisfying meal and a great drink.
