In 1876, Billy the Kid, a famous gunfighter and outlaw who lived and dueled in the Old West in the 1800s, visited the town of San Elizario in El Paso County, Texas. Now the town holds an annual celebration to commemorate the date, complete with reenactments, plays, historical tours, and more. A main attraction of San Elizario’s Billy the Kid Festival is a reenactment of Billy the Kid breaking into the El Paso County jail while posing as a Texas Ranger to set his friend free. Other events include 1876 Billy The Kid Play, musical performances, and a ghost tour.
