The Menger Bar, built in 1859, counts Theodore Roosevelt and his Rough Riders as some of its most famous patrons. The grand hotel, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, boasts Victorian-era decor and museum-grade furnishings in its suites – many of which showcase views of the Alamo. Dogs up to 40lb (18kg) can stay at this pet-friendly hotel for a $125 fee. While they can’t be left alone, there’s an on-site Spanish courtyard garden, and you’re adjacent to the River Walk.

However, your pets can be left alone, if crated, while you explore San Antonio. The Four-Diamond hotel dates back to 1853 and has a Spanish feel, with wood-beamed ceilings, terracotta floor tiles and a heated pool in the fountain courtyard.
