Home of the New York Yankees, the Bronx isn’t just for baseball lovers. This NYC borough also hosts the Bronx Zoo, the New York Botanical Garden and “the real Little Italy” near Arthur Avenue. If you’re itching to visit, but are unsure of where to stay, here’s our pick of the best hotels.

1. Residence Inn by Marriott New York the Bronx at Metro Center Atrium

When reliability is a must, this Bronx outpost of the Residence Inn by Marriott is about as safe as it gets. Wake up in a chic and modern room before savoring a complimentary hot breakfast. There’s also a fitness center with cardio machines and free weights, or you could download the MapMyFitness app and follow the Residence Inn-curated running route past local landmarks. A weekly roster of social events brings you closer to the community – look out for Mix It Up, in which local food-truck owners and restaurant chefs are invited to the hotel to cook.

2. Edge Hotel

The Edge Hotel sits on the other side of the Harlem River, so technically, it’s in neighboring Washington Heights, but still within walking distance of Yankee Stadium. You’ll stay in one of 54 clean-lined rooms, equipped with a Keurig coffee machine and Lather bath amenities. To get to the Bronx, you can walk over the High Bridge, the oldest bridge in New York City.

3. Best Western Plus Stadium Inn

So close to the stadium that you can practically hear the cheers, this Best Western is in a great spot if you’re looking to catch a Yankees game. Rooms are functional, and you can splash out a bit more for views of the Harlem River. A stay comes with a complimentary hot breakfast buffet, and you’ll also have access to the onsite fitness center, complete with cardio machines and weights.

5. Ramada by Wyndham Bronx

In the northeast corner of the Bronx, this Ramada sits right by Pelham Bay Park, the largest public park in New York City. It makes for a calming getaway when you need a break from the round-the-clock whirr of the Big Apple. At the park, you can spend your days golfing on one of two courses, exploring 13mi (21km) of shoreline, or playing sports in the extensive facilities. Back at the hotel, you’ll enjoy an unfussy retreat with complimentary breakfast and a grab-and-go convenience store.

6. Morris Guest House

For a budget-friendly break in the Bronx, the Morris Guest House is surprisingly stylish. Inside a historic brownstone building, the guestrooms come with the exposed brickwork you might expect in a trendy New York City loft. For a bit more space, book the deluxe queen room. There’s also a shared bathroom and kitchen, plus free wifi in communal areas and your room.

7. Opera House Hotel

A former opera house, this historic hotel in the South Bronx once hosted the magic of Houdini and the wit of the Marx Brothers. Now the showmanship comes through in a timeless design and a museum-worthy selection of photos and posters. A continental breakfast and complimentary cookie hour sweeten your stay nicely. Nearby, you’ll find plenty of entertainment; the Yankee Stadium and the Bronx Museum of the Arts are within walking distance.
