One of the great joys of autumn is pumpkin pie. It’s a staple of the season – something as ritualized and significant to American culture as trick-or-treating or apple-picking. And if you’re in NYC, there are tons of bakeries that serve it, some offering the classic original and others putting their own spin on the recipe. From pie shops specializing in handmade pies to bake shops that serve pie specifically for the season only, here are the places where you’ll find the most delicious pumpkin pie in the city.

1. Petee's Pie

Bakery, American

A pie shop where they make homemade pies from scratch every day, pumpkin is only the beginning at Petee’s Pie. Aside from pumpkin, fall flavors include ‘maple whiskey walnut’, ‘sweet potato’, ‘hudson valley apple’, and ‘brown butter honey pecan’, but since they’re made each day from scratch you never know what specials will be offered. Petee’s Pies are often called the best pies in NYC, so don’t hesitate to trust them with this autumn favorite.

2. Four & Twenty Blackbirds

Bakery, Cafe, Dessert Shop, American, Pastries, Dessert

Founded in 2009 by two sisters, Four & Twenty Blackbirds has become a neighborhood favorite. The sisters learned their pie-making skills from their mother and aunts, and have now brought their recipes to Brooklyn. Their pumpkin pie is actually ‘brown butter pumpkin,’ but other fall flavours on the menu include ‘bourbon pear crumble,’ ‘salted caramel apple,’ and ‘plum streusel’ this season.

3. Breads Bakery

Bakery, American

Breads Bakery is an NYC institution, and they’re most known for having the best babka you can find, as well as other Middle Eastern breads. But Breads is also known for it’s high quality products overall, so it’s no surprise that they’d have an amazing seasonal pumpkin pie. Come in for a slice, but be sure to stock up on their other products for carb cravings later in the day.

5. Little Pie Company

Food Stall, Bakery, Pastelaria, American

With a name like Little Pie Company, it’s not surprising that this pie shop makes their own, from-scratch pumpkin pie. They have tons of other fall specialties to choose from (like ‘sour cream apple walnut’ pie), and if you’re having trouble choosing just one then go for their fall sampler – a $34 package of five, four-inch pies including all of their autumn specials.

6. Butter & Scotch

Restaurant, Bakery, Dessert Shop, Bar, Cocktail Bar, American

Butter & Scotch might be the greatest institution in the world – it’s a combination bar & bakery serving cocktails along with desserts. Many of their menu items combine the two (like a class of champagne + a piece of birthday cake, or a vodka martini + a hot fudge sundae), but they also have an extensive dessert menu including a list of pies. They always offer a ‘seasonal pie’ which will most certainly be pumpkin on many days this fall, but if it’s not, may we suggest their ‘bourbon ginger pecan pie.’

7. The Blue Stove

Bakery, Ice Cream Parlour, American, Pastries

Located in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, The Blue Stove is an quaint pie shop making adorable small-batch pies. Everyone knows a good crust is the secret to a great pie, and at The Blue Stove their crusts are legendary. They also serve light food so, if you want, you can have a full and balanced breakfast yogurt and granola followed by pumpkin pie if you so desire.

8. Baked

The name ‘Baked‘ says it all – this baked goods shop offers tons of options year around. From sweet to savory, cookies to quiche, there’s truly something for everyone. Come autumn, they always serve pumpkin pie, and here you can get mini pies or full-sized, nine-inch versions. Whichever you choose, it’ll be made to order with an oat and whole wheat crust.
