If you’re going to start a company in New York, there’s a strong chance you’ll need venture capital money at some point. For the budding entrepreneurs in the Big Apple, it’s worth getting to know some of the biggest VCs in the city.

Venture capital firms are the companies that will invest in your grand idea, take a percentage of the business, and try and help your startup reach new levels. When entrepreneurs are looking for VC investment, they usually cast a wide net, and it’s not surprising that there’s a concentration of VC firms in Silicon Valley and the San Francisco Bay Area. But sometimes the most logical approach is to stay close to home, and there are plenty of VCs here in New York City looking to support local startups.

RRE Ventures

Based in Manhattan, RRE Ventures looks to invest in younger companies, and has a strong emphasis on New York-based businesses and entrepreneurs. The firm has invested in the likes of Buzzfeed, Venmo, Business Insider, Giphy, Huffington Post, and more, and looks at the internet, software, and communications industries in particular. The company has raised $1.5 billion over its lifetime to invest in companies, and due to the depth of its pockets is able to continue to invest in companies even as their valuations soar.

Great Oaks VC

Great Oaks gets into businesses right at the start, in what’s known as seed investing. The company is based in midtown Manhattan and also runs a shared office space for some of its portfolio companies in Soho. The firm has backed more than 300 businesses, including the likes of Tidal Labs, OKCupid, and Trulia.

Union Square Ventures

Union Square Ventures invests in startups that are at all stages of their lifespans but exclusively focuses on internet companies. The firm’s portfolio companies are based all over the world but it has invested in significant New York-based startups like Meetup, MongoDB, FourSquare, Codeacademy, and Tumblr.

Bowery Capital

Named after a neighborhood in Manhattan, Bowery Capital invests exclusively in entrepreneurs looking to modernize business through technology. The company raised an investment cash pile of $60 million at the end of 2016 and focuses mainly on early stage investing. Bowery has invested in startups such as ActionIQ, Moat, mParticle, and others.
