Williamsburg might have moved on from being Brooklyn’s best hipster hangout, but its Michelin-star restaurants, expensive boutiques and shiny high-rise condos offer a new kind of cool. With sweltering summer temperatures rising to almost 86F (30C), a hotel with a pool is the ideal place to spend your hottest days in New York City. Here are the most impressive.

Home to the largest outdoor saltwater pool in the city, McCarren Hotel & Pool is a stylish haven in the heart of Williamsburg. A fun and eclectic vibe makes its way from the chic rooftop bar right through to its modern rooms; expect Frette linens, glass-enclosed rain showers, plus the option of private balconies that offer views of McCarren Park or the scene around the pool below.

A calming oasis defined by a palette of serene neutrals, plenty of natural light and plants at every turn, 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge is famed for its eco-friendly credentials. Here, water glasses are made from recycled bottles, bed frames are crafted from reclaimed wood, and organic cotton mattresses are as soft as they come. The highlight, however, is its rooftop pool deck and plunge pool where you can cool off to sweeping views of the Manhattan skyline with cocktail in hand.

3. The William Vale

The William Vale’s 60ft (18m) pool is the ideal place to beat the heat during a sweltering day in the concrete jungle – just keep in mind the terrace is shaded from early afternoon, so you’ll want to catch your rays early. The hotel itself has 183 rooms, including 25 suites, all with huge private balconies, as well as one of the most dazzling rooftop bars in NYC. Feeling peckish? Its southern Italian restaurant Leuca is renowned for its fresh wood-fired pizzas, so be sure to tuck in.

The star of the show is its refreshing seasonal pool complete with a fully stocked bar and open-air sun deck serving up poolside appetizers and an extensive cocktail list. The vibe switches come nightfall when the neighborhood’s after-hours scene livens up, so get out there and explore this artsy hub of indie music performances, gallery shows and open-all-hours eateries.

If you’re finding it too hot to trot around NYC, the Williamsburg’s 40ft (12m) rooftop pool offers the perfect retreat from the heat. Offering unobstructed views of the Manhattan skyline, it’s designed by London-based design firm Michaelis Boyd Studio of Soho House Berlin fame. Kitsch touches continue throughout the hotel, with floor-to-ceiling windows, marble and brass bathroom fixtures and plush velvet chesterfields all adding to the authentic industrial style for which the brand is so well-loved.

7. Aloft New York Brooklyn

Situated just outside Williamsburg, the Brooklyn outpost of Aloft – a younger, budget-friendly take on the W brand – is a popular base in easy reach of the city’s buzzing social scene. While rooms are simple, they are clean and functional, with rooms on higher floors boasting west-facing windows onto the Manhattan skyline. Its indoor rooftop pool may be shared with the Starwood next door, but it never gets too busy, so there’s no need to worry about crowded lanes during your morning laps.

8. Sheraton Brooklyn

A great pitstop for health-conscious travelers, there’s a fully equipped fitness center, pool and jacuzzi, as well as a rooftop garden serving up some hand-crafted cocktails. It’s also home to the Asian-infused Kimoto Rooftop & Bar that pays homage to the East with a carefully curated menu of bite-sized bar snacks that will tantalize your taste buds.
