Obama Still Has Excellent Taste in Restaurants

During a visit to New York, former US President Barack Obama lunched at Gramercy Tavern today. The restaurant posted a video to Instagram—and then deleted it minutes later–of Obama smiling, waving, and shaking hands as he left the restaurant; he appeared to be emerging from the private dining room. Meanwhile, Mike Anthony, Gramercy Tavern’s executive chef, posted a photo of some of his team with the former President.

Thrilled to welcome President @barackobama @gramercytavern today. #proud #barackobama

Last night, Obama dined at Emilio’s Ballato with his daughter Malia. The classic red-sauce joint in Little Italy is a favorite of chefs and of celebrities as diverse as Rihanna, Snoop Dogg, and Daniel Day-Lewis.

During his time as President, Obama made a point of dining at new and fashionable foodie favorites during his trips to New York City, including Cosme, Upland, Estela, and The Nomad—basically a roster of the hottest tables in town over the past few years.

Which leads us to wonder: As much as we love Gramercy Tavernwe were just telling a new colleague it’s our eternal NYC favorite, at the very moment that Obama was dining there—why hasn’t he yet been to Le Coucou, currently the hottest spot in the city? Does he, too, find it impossible to land a reservation there?
