Michelin Just Announced Its 2018 Star Ratings for NYC Restaurants

Picture of Kathryn Maier

Updated: 30 October 2017
The Michelin Guide’s annual ranking of New York restaurants was just released, and there are some big surprises this year.

In the ever-expanding world of restaurant rankings, the Michelin Guides—a France-based series of guidebooks that rank restaurants and hotels in major cities and regions worldwide—have been a constant for more than a century. Its star system, established with the notion of journeys by car in mind, is simple: Three stars—the highest accolade–denotes a restaurant with “exceptional cuisine, worth a special journey.” Two stars mean “excellent cooking, worth a detour,” and one star notes “high-quality cooking, worth a stop.”

The rankings generally stay fairly consistent from year to year, and there weren’t a ton of changes to the NYC guide for 2018. The most notable news is that Jean Georges, which has held three stars since the inception of the NYC guide in 2006, dropped to two stars for 2018. This sort of demotion from the highest ranks doesn’t occur often (some would say it doesn’t occur often enough), and it’s notable when it does.

The only big rise this year is by Sushi Ginza Onodera, which was promoted from one star to two.

Japanese restaurants fared well in general. Half of the six new one-star restaurants are Japanese: Bar Uchu, Satsuki, and Sushi Amane. The other new one-star restaurants are Rouge Tomate Chelsea, Cote, and The Clocktower. Eight restaurants fell off the list, most of them due to having closed.
