Formula E returned to the streets of New York City as part of the 2018 New York International Auto Show. Former champion Nelson Piquet Jr. led a convoy of all-electric vehicles as they drove down 11th Ave. en route to the Javits Center on March 31.

It was the first time Formula E, the world’s first fully electric, single-seater street racing series, has been in the Big Apple since the inaugural NYC E-Prix in July 2017—the first international motor race to be held in the city.

“To be the first to drive the Formula E car on the streets in New York has been a lot of fun,” Piquet Jr. said in a release. “I love this city and I’ve enjoyed the opportunity to promote electric vehicles like the new Jaguar I-Pace, our first all-electric performance SUV, and launch the New York City E-Prix.”

The 2018 NYC E-Prix is July 14 and 15, serving as the calendar’s season finale. The 1.52-mile course, along the waterfront in Red Hook, Brooklyn, has been extended from the 1.22-mile track last year.

“The new track layout will make the racing more competitive and New York is the perfect place for the championship finale in July,” Piquet Jr. said.

Launched in September 2014, Formula E consists of 10 teams and 20 drivers competing in 10 cities and five continents around the globe during a seven-month season.

The all-electric racing series is also a platform for manufacturers and mobility providers to test and develop new technologies, while reducing carbon emissions and helping improve the environment.

“We’re just trying to leave a better place for the next generations because if we carry on like this, this planet will not be possible to live on in the future,” TECHEETAH driver Jean-Eric Vergne said.

The 2018 New York City E-Prix is July 14-15 in Red Hook, Brooklyn. Tickets are on sale now.
