On Saturday, July 9th, Socrates Sculpture Park will host an event dedicated to the simple pleasure of flying a kite. Visitors are welcome to create their own kites from recycled materials, using the park’s incredible views of the Manhattan skyline as artistic inspiration. Artists, designers, and teachers from Socrates and the nearby Noguchi Museum will host classes to teach participants how to make their own kites, while exploring themes of community and freedom. Cameras and sketch pads are also welcome. As it so happens, this year’s Kite Day coincides with the Manhattan Kayak Circumnavigation, so a fleet of colorful kayaks will paddle their way through the East River below. Take the kids or make it a date, make new friends, and fly a kite.
