NYCxDesign is New York City’s official “citywide celebration of design” and attracts an international community of exhibitors and visitors that flock to the city to get their fill of all things creative. The program includes curated pop-ups, exhibitions, panel discussions, dance parties, and festivals all over the city, all month long.
Here are some of NYCxDesign’s hottest events coming up in May:
Located in a converted warehouse in the ever-trendy Greenpoint neighborhood, A/D/O is a chic 23,000 square foot creative space (and design academy) that pushes the boundaries of design in every way. On May 13, A/D/O is hosting their second design festival entitled Common Sense. The day-long event will “examine the role of design in forming identity and constructing shared experience, and will feature panel talks, discussions, and the unveiling of an immersive exhibition by New York-based design studio PlayLab, Inc.” The line-up includes talks by Jay Osgerby, Harry Parr, and Chandler Burr, among others.

Wanted Design NYC is one of the most dynamic showcases for design in the city. Beginning May 17, the events offer “a 360-degree experience with innovative installations, memorable products, pop-up stores, interactive experiences, convivial lounges, thought-provoking student workshops, engaging discourse and more.” Their impressive program and line-up of exhibitors is sure to be a memorable experience for design lovers.

ICFF is “North America’s platform for global design” and one of NYC’s largest design shows of the year. The showcase features 750 international exhibitors and runs over the course of four days at the Jacob Javits Convention Center. The International Contemporary Furniture Fair will host a series of talks, panel discussions, and feature some of the world’s best homewares, lighting, and of course, furniture.

Sight Unseen Offsite
Beginning May 19, Sight Unseen OFFSITE returns this year with a hyper-curated list of 25 presenters to “bring together … some of the most sophisticated brands and studios in contemporary design,” says their website. Exhibitors include Calico Wallpaper, Erich Ginder, Jean-Pascal Gauthier, Norway x New York, Jonathan Gonzalez + Deon Rubi, and more. Sight Unseen will showcase design events and showcasings in 12 participating restaurants and stores for their new series “Sight Unseen Presents.”

Design Pavilion NYC/ NYC Design Talks
Technically the NYC Design Talks began at the start of the month, but the dialogue is still going strong. Throughout the month of May, NYC Design Talks will host a community-based talk series to the public that encourages sharing thoughts on design “enhancement and improvement of our future.” Located in the heart of Manhattan (obviously Times Square) and presented by IBM, the culturally conscious program list can be found here.

Tech+ explores the necessary intersection of design and technology in the form of a day-long conference. Tech+ will showcase new products and designs by some of the world’s leading tech companies, including Graphisoft, Humanscale, IrisVR, NYC Media Lab, and more.

Dance Party by A/D/O
After you get your fill of new ideas at Common Sense, mark your calendar for A/D/O’s dance party on May 19. Labeled “A Night For The Senses” the performance/party is sure to be filled with designers, thought-leaders, artists, and creatives from all over the five boroughs.
