Updated: 9 June 2016
If there’s one commodity that this city has in abundance, it’s the summer sounds of outdoor music. You can hear it on any given day, from impromptu jams in Washington Square Park to the cozy outdoor concert confines in Forrest Hills, Queens. Summer concerts range from indie rock at Central Park’s Summerstage to Jazz at Lincoln Center and Afro-Punk in Brooklyn‘s Clinton Hill. Starting on June 8th, catch one of the oldest, most eclectic, and revered of the bunch: the BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival in Prospect Park.

Over 2,000 artists have graced the stage of the BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival since its inception back in 1979. The list includes music giants such as Isaac Hayes, David Byrne, Bob Dylan, The National, T.V. on the Radio, Norah Jones, and Prince. Celebrate Brooklyn!’s combination of music, dance, and film keeps fans coming back for more year after year; over 250,000 patrons attend annually during its two and a half month-long run.

The settings within Prospect Park make the BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival particularly special. Endowed with cozy natural settings, wonderful sight lines, impeccable sound engineering, a fantastic band shell, and a concession stand that can hold its own, featuring fare from the best restaurants in the neighborhood, paired with the unmatched talent and energy on stage, make for an absolutely unforgettable night out.

This year’s lineup might be one of the best they have ever assembled, opening the evening of June 8th with the sensational R&B sounds of Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings. In the coming weeks, the groundbreaking indie alt-rock band The Violent Femmes will be on hand for an evening of edgy, confessional anthems.

Alt-country mainstay Josh Ritter, Steven Colbert’s band leader Jon Batiste, and hip-hop mainstays Digable Planets are amongst the upcoming highlights visitors can anticipate in July 2016. August brings in the likes of Philadelphia’s Dr. Dog, and the closing night of the festival will showcase R&B artists Andra Day and Son Little.
