Unless you’re lucky enough to live near a beach, finding a spot in New York City to scratch your aquatic sports itch (not to mention to cool off on hot days) can be challenging. Stand-up paddle boarding (SUP) is a fun way to get out on the water, see NYC from a different perspective, and get a great full-body workout. Here are five companies offering SUP classes and tours to adventurous students in the city.

Manhattan Kayak Company

Located at the Pier 84 boathouse on the Hudson River, Manhattan Kayak Company has something to offer everyone, from beginners to seasoned pros. MKC offers an expansive set of courses, including ‘SUP 1-2-3’, where students learn about the board, paddle, and basic strokes, and a five-hour tour of ‘Governor’s Island by SUP.’ Courses range in price from $40-100 (with some discounted package options) and last from one to five hours. SUP rentals are also available starting at $15.

New York Kayak Company

For adventure-seeking yogis, there are SUP yoga classes offered at New York Kayak Company, which is an ideal way to combine two passions. Located at Pier 40 on the Hudson River, NY Kayak Company offers the usual introductory classes, a variety of tours around the city, and annual memberships for those with their own boards. Courses range from $40-100 for a two-hour class and $1,049 for memberships.

A-Team Paddleboarding

Founded by husband and wife Andrew and Amy, A-Team Paddleboarding prides itself on offering classes by instructors with World Paddle Association (WPA) certificates. Whether you’re looking to take your SUP skills to the next level and learn how to race like the pros, or book a private beginner lesson, you’ll know you had the best teachers around. Classes range from $50-175 per person.

Rockaway Jet Ski

If you’re looking to venture out of Manhattan for a SUP session, gather a group of friends and head to Jamaica Bay with Rockaway Jet Ski’s SUP team. Experienced SUP enthusiasts lead classes focused on technique and efficiencies, and they offer a full lineup of yoga classes focused on helping students improve stability both on and off the water. Group lessons start at $50 per person for an one-hour class.
