The Top Autumn/Winter 2017 NYFW Beauty Trends You Can Wear Off the Catwalk

With New York Fashion Week (NYFW) underway, Culture Trip enlisted celebrity makeup artist Nil S. Muir, who has worked with clients like Taraji P. Henson, Usher, Christina Millian, Andrea Bocelli, and David Guetta, as well as Sarah Hyland and Jussie Smollet. Below, Muir gives you the lowdown on how to steal makeup looks from the runway and incorporate flawlessly into your own beauty routine.

As a makeup artist for celebrities, television, and print for almost 15 years now, I’ve seen trends come and go and get recycled all over again. In 2017, skin will be more breathable, transparent, less “done,” to create a more earthy, youthful look. With celebrities like Alicia Keys embracing the “Minimal Makeup” movement, designers like Rodarte and Calvin Klein are taking a cue, and showing more wearable beauty looks that the everyday woman can achieve off the runway.

One major change is that we are seeing less of the contrived contour. (Veteran makeup artists like to call the heavy contour “Instagram makeup,” by the way.) Instead, you’ll see more natural, dewy faced looks on the runways during NYFW. Boyish brows, statement pouts, and metallic eyes will be some of the other looks you’ll be swooning over. But the question becomes, how can you take these trends from the runway to the real world without resembling a fembot?

Below, find her NYFW A/W ’17 runway to real life makeup takeaways.

1. Pop Mode

This trend is all about the contrast between the bare and the bold. Pair nearly-naked skin and eyes with a powerful pout. Even with the “no makeup” makeup look, you still use a little product, but it’s so effortless, you can do it while waiting for your Lyft to arrive.

Healthy, dewy skin is a must, so make sure to exfoliate twice a week, use a hydrating moisturizer for your skin type, a liquid illuminator on your temples and above cheekbones, and a medium coverage foundation to hide any imperfections. To keep the eyes simple, apply two coats of black mascara, and then finish the look with a black lip. It’s the “it” color of the season. However, if that’s too daring, opt for a dark burgundy, plum or deep maroon instead.

2. Sleek Chic

T3 SinglePass Compact Flat Iron

Perfectly slick, pin straight hair is back and is a major A/W 2017 beauty trend. Professional and posh, this look elevates your style. Keep hair shiny and healthy by using sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner and styling products. If your hair is very unruly, try a Keratin or Brazilian Blowout hair treatment. I’m a personal fan because they cut styling time in half.

Finally, finish with a flat-iron, and you’ll be turning heads.

3. Luscious Lips

With matte lipstick dominating the catwalks in recent years, look for glossy lips to make a comeback in A/W 2017. Use peach, nude, or pink shades but skip the liner for effortlessly chic lips.

4. Heavy Metal

The Olympics may be over, but gold, silver and bronze shadows are big on trend for your peepers. Metallic looks are great for parties, a night on the town with your girlfriends, or a sexy date night. To keep shadow in place, use an eyeshadow primer before applying the shadow. If you don’t have a shadow primer, you can use a dab of your concealer instead.

Next, use a tapered shadow brush to apply the shadow all over the lid, up to the crease. Blending is key. For a softer version just apply a metallic shade of your choice to the inner corners to really open your eyes.

5. Color Outside the Lines

Haven’t perfected your eye pencil skills yet? No worries. The A/W 17 beauty forecast is that liner remain “undone,” channeling a messy, bedhead look. To achieve this, line your upper, lower, and inner rims with your favorite black liner, and then smudge with a Q-tip. Use an oil-free eye makeup remover to get rid of excess liner from the inner and outer corners, to mimic the morning after look.Make Up For Ever Waterproof Eye Cleaner

6. Hair Flip

Deep side parts scream a “take no prisoners” attitude. A deep side part is the simplest, quickest way to dramatically change your hair look without using scissors or dye. You can rock this look whether with waves, or gathered in a bun or low pony. Pick a side that flatters your face and use a fine tooth comb to take the part as deep as you can go (the deeper, the edgier). Finish with a medium hold hair spray for texture and light hold.

7. Monochrome Minimalist

This look is even simpler than it sounds. Choose a neutral shade that suits you—browns, soft burgundy, and nudes are flattering on most and work well with the trend. Building on a Spring/Summer 2017 makeup trend, this look goes one step further to create a monochrome palette for eyes, cheeks and lips.

You can use your lipstick as a cream blush (this has saved me on many a shoot, when I didn’t have the exact color I wanted) which is great, especially in the cold winter months, when skin is thirsty and begging for hydration.

8. Bountiful Brows

The “boyish brow” trend is still hot for A/W 2017. Not only is a full brow edgy it helps create a youthful look. To cop a bountiful brow, say goodbye to arches and groom your brow straight.

If you’re lacking in the brow department, fake it with a brow gel and brow mascara that have staying power. If you’re going to use a brow powder or pencil instead to achieve the look, be sure to use a clear brow gel on top to set. Finish with a disposable mascara wand, or “spooley” brush to shape. Finally, clean up any strays, too close to your eyelid with a tweezer.

9. Rainbow Effect

Think outside the box. When you think of mascara, you think of black. But why not try some color? Violet, blue and even red hues are a great way to look like you just stepped off the runway. Use a good lash curler to open the eyes, then add three coats of your favorite color. Keep the rest of your makeup neutral.

10. Underneath It All

Try wearing your eyeliner only on the lower lash line. If that’s too tricky to master, line the inner rims, as well. A dark blue, hunter green works well for this look, or if you want to take a walk on the wild side, try pastels for a little ‘80s throwback. Smudge with a Q-tip, for a subtle look.
