Whether you’re looking for a quick and delicious pick me up, a quiet spot to work or a cool place to hang out with friends, everyone needs to know a good coffee shop (or 10). Detroit is luckily blessed with many, and these 10 are just the tip of the iceberg.

1. Astro Coffee

Corktown’s Astro Coffee is very popular thanks to its hip and rustic décor, wall art, friendly staff and superior coffee. They use and sell a selection of coffee from some of the country’s best roasters, with a menu that rotates on a daily basis. They also offer a small but unique menu of sandwiches and baked goods, all of which is made in store. While you can expect to queue, most agree it’s totally worth it.

2. The Red Hook Detroit

Bringing some Brooklyn spirit to the West Village and Ferndale, The Red Hook, a café and bakery, serves up a range of delicious sweet and savory treats alongside Stumptown coffee. The interior is bright, simple and uncluttered and makes for a relaxed and inviting vibe. The spacious approach to seating is ideal for a quiet drink, but be prepared to wait for a table.

5. Roasting Plant

Roasting Plant, a New York coffee chain promising the finest beans roasted to perfection using its cutting-edge technology, sits by Campus Martius on Woodward. Javabot, the system of pneumatic tubes that stores and delivers the beans ensures the freshest coffee while also contributing a cool design feature. Popular with Downtown workers, they offer a variety of exotic brews for reasonable prices.

6. The Great Lakes Coffee Roasting Company

Coffee Shop, Coffee

The Great Lakes Coffee Roasting Company near the Majestic Theatre in Midtown has been open since 2010 and is much more than a coffee shop. As a restaurant and bar, it offers an extensive food and drinks menu, as well as having the finest and most responsibly grown coffee from around the world. Busy with young professionals and students, it’s a great place to spend a day working.

7. The Bottom Line Coffee House

Coffee Shop, American

The Bottom Line Coffee House opened in 2012, and it has become far more than a coffee shop since, positioning itself as an art space and a safe space for all. They sell a variety of local pastries alongside coffees from around the world, and early in 2017, customers showed their loyalty by raising over $8,000 to help The Bottom Line stay in business.

8. Coffee and (___)

Cafe, American

Originally a pop-up that became permanent in 2014, the blank in the name of Coffee and (___) represents the ever-changing specialties of owner and pastry chef Angela Foster. Creative and delicious scones, pies, tarts and more all feature on the breakfast, brunch and lunch menu, and you can find out the day’s rotating pastry theme on Twitter and Facebook.

9. Fourteen East Cafe

Cafe, American

Fourteen East sits in the historic Park Shelton Building, once home to Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo. Created by interior designer Joanne Czerny, it’s a unique café/gallery, displaying art and exhibitions, which you can enjoy with Michigan’s own Chazzano’s roasted organic coffee. Are you looking for somewhere different to host your next business meeting? They have a bookable room that can accommodate up to 10 people.

10. Always Brewing Detroit

Cafe, Coffee Shop, American

Rosedale Park’s Always Brewing Detroit is another coffee shop that doubles as an art gallery, with artists showing their work for a month at a time among the spacious setting. It reopened under new management in 2016 but has stuck to a simple menu offering coffee from some of the best Michigan-based roasters, and food options including soup and sandwiches.
