Our favorite moment staying here? Heading up to the rooftop deck, footsore after a day’s sightseeing, and sipping a glass of wine while taking in views of the city. The apartments are in the South End, which puts you within walking distance of Copley Square and Back Bay. And you won’t want for food – the neighborhood is teeming with restaurants, as well as smart shops to peruse when you’ve done the art galleries. Holed up inside, you’ve got kitchens with stainless-steel appliances, as well as in-unit laundry. Expect two bedrooms, one or two bathrooms, dining areas and – useful when rain stops play – living areas have couches and chairs.

2. Kenmore Apartments by Starlight Suites

Here’s a good choice for first-timers to Boston – and/or travelers in town to watch the Red Sox. A 15-minute drive from Logan Airport, these two-bedroom apartments come with fully equipped kitchens. You’re 2mi from the centre of Boston, and a short walk from Fenway Park, the Museum of Fine Art and Symphony Hall. If you’re here in winter you’ll appreciate the working fireplace in the living rooms.

3. Modern Apartments in Back Bay by Barsala

Welcome to this three-and-a-half-star aparthotel in one of Boston’s poshest areas, Back Bay. You’re a 15-minute walk from the Museum of Fine Arts, the Isabella Stuart Gardner Museum and Newbury Street, lined with high-end shops. The choice is between one- and two-bedroom apartments with combined living and dining areas – all with stainless-steel and granite kitchens (featuring dishwashers, stoves and full-size refrigerators). The rooftop deck is a great place to chank open beers and relax after you’ve overdone it on the sightseeing.

5. Back Bay Duplex Boston

What a good-looking brownstone this is – the kind of place you’d move into if you had the money. If you don’t, you can still afford to check in at this spectacular four-bedroom duplex for a few days and have the city weekend of your dreams. It’s very handy for the esplanade where crowds gather for the fireworks on the Fourth of July. You’re also close to the boutiques and restaurants of Newbury Street. Inside the property, we love the character that comes from antiques and old timber floors.

6. Packard's Corner Apartments

If you only need a base, we’ve flagged up these apartments in Allston, 20 minutes from the city proper on the Green Line B train. Caveat emptor: they lack the designer-pizzazz and smart amenities of those in Boston proper (furnishings evoke college dorms), but units have one or two bedrooms and a bathroom as well as kitchens that, while tiny, have stoves and refrigerators for those rare nights in cooking. And believe us, they will be rare: the area is filled with students from Boston University and Boston College, so the noise amps up at night, particularly on weekends.
