Baltimore, Maryland, is full of historic neighborhoods that have been transformed through the years to be eclectic, artsy meccas of life and entertainment. Once such neighborhood is located in the downtown area of Baltimore, named Fell’s Point. Fell’s Point is one of the coolest neighborhoods to live in yet it’s rich in history and personality. Let’s look closer at its history.

History

In 1763, Fell’s Point was founded and named after an English Quaker by the name of William Fell. Through the years, various markets and streets were established, along with public schools and a shipyard. Frederick Douglass, a slave that escaped the south and ran north, actually passed through Fell’s Point on his way to freedom.

Fast forward to 1969, Fell’s Point was dubbed Maryland’s first National Historic District and the city continued to teem with life as more people and businesses were drawn to the area.

What’s in Fell’s Point today?

Fell’s Point in today’s modern world is a flurry of activity. There are constant festivals, farmer’s markets and theatre shows for the entire family. Although Fell’s Point has become more built up, the neighborhood still remains true to its original nature, with several historical gems. One such example is that of The Horse You Came In On Saloon, the United States of America’s oldest saloon. Not only do people still frequent this establishment, but it is known as a landmark and a place to go to for a good drink and an even better time.

If you’re looking to venture to a place that has a historic makeup, yet contains many modern conveniences and everyday entertainment, then Fell’s Point is the place to be.
