Truth is, New Orleans does Halloween like no other place in the world. Throughout the ghoulish season, NOLA, fueled by its irrepressible, all-year-round thirst for toasting to anything life-related, mutates into a paranormal hub filled with everything from zombie parades to vampire balls. However, the highlight on and around the year’s scariest holiday is not an event, but rather, the people: those who inhabit the French Quarter’s dark streets dressed in outrageous and inventive costumes. So if you plan on celebrating the supernatural in New Orleans this year, be sure to dress the part. Here, the best places to shop for Halloween attire.

Uptown Costume & Dancewear is the go-to spot for those shopping in the Magazine Street area. This compact store, located in the Uptown neighborhood, stocks one of the largest contemporary collections of costumes in the city as well as dancewear, wigs, hats, makeup supplies, Mardi Gras masks, feathered boots, accessories, and anything else you can think of when visiting a costume shop in New Orleans. You can visit this Elvis-costume emporium beginning 11:00am on Mondays and Wednesdays and at 10:00am on Saturdays.

2. Miss Claudia’s Vintage Clothing & Costumes

This Uptown shop, open every day of the week, stocks an inventory packed with affordable pieces, wigs, jewelry, sunglasses, as well as themed costumes that range from Steve Urkel to Jeff the Killer and everything in between. Miss Claudia’s, whose specialty is styles from the 60s, 70s, and 90s, is the perfect Halloween retailer for those looking to impersonate retro characters such as Elizabeth Taylor, Danny Zuko, Michael Jackson, Cher, or maybe even the heroic Hans Solo.

3. Funky Monkey

Store

Funky Monkey, a boutique located in the Uptown district of New Orleans, offers both men and women new, used, and vintage apparel, sunglasses, shoes, hats, creative accessories, and on-trend costumes such as the already-popular Harley Quinn and the reincarnated Pikachu. This shop, which sits within Magazine Street’s commercial strip, admits customers from Monday through Saturday starting at 11:00am and Sundays at midday. A local favorite, Funky Monkey is the store where you will be able to purchase an outrageous Halloween costume and inexpensive, contemporary fashion at the same time.
